The Game Bakers, the French studio behind Furi and Haven, have announced the first DLC for Cairn, their climbing game, and they won't be charging for it: the content will be free. The core information comes from Eurogamer España, which reported on the studio's announcement.

It may look like minor news, but there's more to it than meets the eye. In an industry where almost every addition comes wrapped in season passes, deluxe editions and microtransactions, an independent studio choosing to expand its game without charging for it says a lot about how it views its relationship with the community. And for those who have already reached the summit in Cairn, it's the perfect excuse to lace up their boots again.

What you need to know

  • Cairn is getting DLC: it's the first downloadable content the game has received since launch.
  • It will be free: The Game Bakers will offer it at no extra cost to anyone who already owns the game.
  • It's announced by the studio itself: this isn't a rumor or a leak, but official communication reported by Eurogamer España.
  • Details are missing: the information we have doesn't specify a release date or the exact contents of the DLC, so we'll have to wait.

What Cairn is and why this announcement fits the studio

Cairn is not your typical climbing game. Instead of pressing a button to scale a pre-designed wall, you control Aava, a mountaineer who has to decide where to place each hand and foot, manage fatigue, gear and resources, and accept that the mountain doesn't forgive mistakes. It's slow, it's demanding, and it has a survival element that turns every ascent into a small personal story. That's why it has resonated with a very specific audience: people who enjoy tension, calculated risk and the feeling of having earned every meter.

The Game Bakers have a track record of supporting their games after launch and of prioritizing design over sheer volume of content. Furi became a cult classic among boss-fight enthusiasts, and Haven took a bold narrative approach. Expanding Cairn now with a free DLC is consistent with that way of working: they'd rather build loyalty with those who already trusted them than squeeze them for more.

What changes for the community

For those who already own the game, the free DLC is a direct reason to reinstall it and head back to the mountain. For those who had it on their wishlist, the announcement is a sign that the game will stay alive and keep growing, which carries a lot of weight when deciding whether to buy a niche title. And for the creator ecosystem, any new content in a game with this kind of visual and mechanical identity is prime material for videos, streams and challenges.

What we don't know yet is the actual scope: whether we're talking about a new route, a different mode, new climbing mechanics or a more modest addition. Until the studio spells it out, it's best to keep expectations in check.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz we applaud the move without reservation. Seeing an independent studio say "this one's free" at a time when the industry is normalizing charging for almost everything is refreshing, and we believe the community should reward it with more than applause: by playing it, talking about it and recommending it. Studios that treat their player base well deserve to have that base respond.

That said, we're also critical: an announcement with no date and no concrete content is, for now, a promise. We understand the strategy of building anticipation, but competitive players and creators want to know what they'll be able to do and when, so they can plan challenges, time trials or content series. Cairn has enormous potential for speedruns and community challenges, and a well-designed DLC could open up new routes that become the next "who can climb this the fastest?". We hope the studio keeps that side in mind and not just the contemplative experience.

For the creators on our team, the advice is clear: if Cairn is already in your library, now is the time to prepare content around the announcement and keep an eye out for official details. A game with this aesthetic and this mechanical tension works very well on stream, and being the first to cover it when the DLC drops can make all the difference.

What do you think?

A free DLC for Cairn is good news, but we still need to find out what it brings and when it arrives. What would you like to see in this expansion: a new mountain, a time-trial mode to compete with the community, or something completely different? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord.
