It's official: Diablo IV is getting a Nintendo Switch 2 version, and the date circled on the calendar is September 15. As reported by Eurogamer Spain, the announcement came formally from Blizzard Entertainment, so the rumors and questionable screenshots are over: the hell of Sanctuary is also moving to Nintendo's new hybrid.

It matters for a simple reason: until now, playing Diablo IV meant sitting down in front of a PC or a home console. With this version, the loop of farming, leveling characters and chasing legendary loot becomes truly portable, and that changes how and when you play. For a community like ours, spread across the Americas and Europe with impossible schedules, being able to squeeze in a dungeon session on the train or on the couch is no small thing.

What you need to know

  • Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced Diablo IV for Nintendo Switch 2.
  • The confirmed release date is September 15.
  • It's the first time the game comes to a Nintendo hybrid console, expanding the list of platforms it can be played on.
  • The core information comes from Eurogamer Spain's coverage; for now, the technical and content details that will accompany this version are not included in the report.

What changes with this version

Blizzard's move fits with what we've been seeing across the industry: the big live-service games want to be everywhere, because every new platform is one more doorway for players who have yet to set foot in Sanctuary. Diablo IV lives on its seasons, its content rotation and on people coming back every few weeks to try new builds. Putting the game on a machine that fits in a backpack is, in practice, extending the lifespan of every season.

For those already playing on PC or another console, the question everyone is asking is the usual one: will I be able to keep my characters or do I start from scratch? The source doesn't go there, so we're not going to make up an answer. What we do know is that Blizzard's policy in recent years has moved in the direction of connecting platforms and accounts, and it would be strange for Switch 2 to be left isolated. But until there's official confirmation, treat it as an expectation and not a fact.

Who it really affects

The casual player is barely affected: if they already own the game somewhere, they'll keep playing it there. The real winners are three profiles. First, anyone who never bought a home console or a powerful PC and had Diablo IV on their backlog. Second, the seasonal player who wants to keep up the farming pace without being tied to a chair. And third, the content creator, who suddenly has a new angle: performance comparisons, build guides designed for short sessions and all the interest generated by watching a game of this size running on a handheld.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz we see the news in a positive light, but without fireworks. Diablo IV coming to Switch 2 is a clear sign that Nintendo has built a machine the big third parties feel comfortable on, and that benefits all of us who play across multiple platforms. That said, an ARPG with such a density of enemies, effects and open-world events is a serious test for any handheld hardware. Blizzard gave no details in the announcement covered by Eurogamer Spain, and until we see how it holds up in the busiest areas, caution is the order of the day.

From a competitive standpoint, what worries us isn't so much performance as parity. Diablo IV isn't a pure esports title, but its seasonal leaderboards, level races and dungeon challenges generate real competition between players and between teams. If the Switch 2 version has longer load times or a lower frame rate, people competing from there will be playing at a disadvantage. And if on top of that there's no shared progression, many of our members who already have advanced characters won't even consider buying it.

For creators, on the other hand, the window is gold. The first videos comparing the handheld version with the home console version, the build guides that work well on a controller and the live streams from the Switch 2 are going to draw attention for weeks. If you have a channel with the team, our advice is to have your plan ready for September 15 and not a week later, when everyone has already talked the subject to death.

The date is set and hell goes handheld, but important questions about performance and progression remain unanswered. Tell us in the team chat or on our Discord: are you going to give Diablo IV a shot on Switch 2, or are you sticking with farming on your usual platform?
