The Ice Staff Returns: The Key to The Tomb's Easter Egg in BO6 Zombies

If you've dropped into The Tomb, the Zombies map in Black Ops 6, you'll already know it's not a place for wandering around aimlessly. According to Charlie INTEL, there's one item that makes the difference between surviving a few rounds and actually completing the story: the Ice Staff. The outlet has released a guide with the steps to obtain it, and the detail that interests us most is simple but decisive: this weapon is a central piece of the map's main easter egg.

Why does this matter beyond a tutorial? Because Zombies maps with a well-integrated quest weapon are the ones that build community: squads get organized, routes get recorded, times get compared and chats fill up with theories. That Treyarch has once again bet on an elemental staff as the backbone of the narrative says a lot about where it wants to take the mode, and for a team like ours, with players on both sides of the Atlantic, it's the perfect excuse to get coordinated again.

What you need to know

  • The Ice Staff is available in The Tomb, one of the Zombies maps in Black Ops 6.
  • According to Charlie INTEL, the staff plays a central role in the map's main easter egg, so it's not an optional weapon for anyone looking to complete the story.
  • Getting it requires following a series of specific steps within the match; the outlet has published a dedicated guide for it.
  • It's a progression piece, not just a Mystery Box pull: you have to earn it.

A weapon that is a quest in itself

The idea of an elemental staff is nothing new in Zombies. Veterans will remember the four staffs from Origins, one of the most beloved maps in the entire series, where collecting and upgrading each staff was practically half the easter egg. That The Tomb brings that concept back with the Ice Staff points to a design where the weapon doesn't just hit hard, but opens narrative doors: without it, the rest of the main quest stays locked.

This changes how the map is played. On a map where the quest weapon is expendable, everyone goes at their own pace and picks their own loadout. Here, on the other hand, the group has to get on the same page from round one: who handles which step, when to go for the staff and how to keep whoever is carrying it alive. It's the kind of structure that rewards communication and punishes the squad that charges in without a plan.

Who this really matters to

Three very clear profiles. The casual player, because it gives them a tangible goal and a sense of progress in a mode that can sometimes feel like an endless repetition of rounds. The competitive player, because any weapon that's a requirement for the easter egg becomes a mandatory stop on speedrun routes and a factor to optimize down to the second. And the content creator, because an item with its own chain of steps is prime material for guides, streams and short-form video: there's a story to tell before, during and after getting it.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're glad to see Zombies once again building maps around a weapon with real identity. The maps people remember are the ones with an iconic item and a clear path to obtaining it, and the Ice Staff has every chance of being exactly that in The Tomb. We'd take a map that forces you to learn its logic over one where everything gets solved by hitting the box until something decent drops, a thousand times over.

That said, we have a criticism we repeat every time an easter egg like this shows up: the problem is never the difficulty, it's the opacity. When a weapon is mandatory for the main story, hiding its steps behind mechanics with no in-game hints whatsoever ends up pushing away people who don't want to play with a guide open on their phone. It's healthy to have a challenge for the community to figure out together; it's less healthy for the game to depend on outside outlets, however good they may be, for the average player to understand what they need to do.

For our competitive players, the advice is clear: learn the staff route until you can run it with your eyes closed, because that's where a lot of seconds will be decided in any race against the clock. And for the team's creators, now is the moment: a guide of your own, with your voice and your routes, will always be worth more than a word-for-word repeat of what's already out there.

What do you think?

The debate is open: do you like it when a map forces you to get a specific weapon to progress the story, or would you rather have the freedom to play Zombies your own way with no mandatory steps? Tell us in the team chat or on our Discord. Have you already got the Ice Staff, or are you still struggling to reach it?
