Street Fighter's popcorn bucket is Guile's hair, and yes, you wear it on your head

Some news changes the meta, and some changes how you're going to sit in the theater. This is the second kind. Cody Rhodes, the wrestling superstar playing Guile in the Street Fighter movie arriving in October, has unveiled the film's official popcorn bucket, and it's exactly what you're thinking: Guile's haircut turned into a container, ready for you to put on your head and eat straight out of it. According to GameSpot, the bucket will be exclusive to AMC theaters.

Why are we dedicating an article to a popcorn bucket? Because movie merchandise has become a battle of its own: every big release puts out its collectible bucket, and most of them come and go without leaving a mark. This one, on the other hand, understands the essence of the character better than many video game adaptation scripts. And for a community like ours, which grew up throwing Sonic Booms in the arcades, it's the kind of nod that's genuinely appreciated.

What you need to know

  • What it is: a popcorn bucket shaped like Guile's iconic haircut, unveiled by Cody Rhodes in a video posted on his social media.
  • How it works: the popcorn goes inside, and you can wear it on your head and grab pieces from above, or keep it in your lap and eat from it like any regular bucket.
  • Where: it will be exclusive to AMC theaters, according to GameSpot.
  • When: movie tickets go on sale Monday, September 21; the bucket is expected to be available for pre-order that same day, along with its price.
  • Release: the Street Fighter movie hits theaters on October 16.

The haircut that defines a character

Since Street Fighter II, Guile has been one of the most recognizable faces in the series, and much of that identity comes down to his vertical flattop, which won't budge even for a Flash Kick. Turning it into a physical object you can also eat from is an idea as obvious as it is brilliant, and it's surprising nobody had pulled it off before. Rhodes summed it up in three words that GameSpot highlights: aerodynamic, ergonomic and delicious. It's not a spec sheet, but it makes clear the tone the production is using to sell the movie: no fear of looking ridiculous, with humor front and center.

The move also says something about where video game movies are right now. After years of adaptations that tried to take their characters so seriously they ended up blurring them, the current trend is to embrace what makes the source material special. A bucket with Guile's hair is marketing, sure, but it's also a statement of intent: the movie knows where it comes from.

Confirmed cast and what's still unknown

Alongside Cody Rhodes as Guile, the source confirms Noah Centineo in the role of Ken and Andrew Koji as Ryu, with more familiar names rounding out the cast. What's still unknown is how much the bucket will cost and whether there will be limited units per theater, two details that usually make the difference between an accessible item and a resale collectible. Everything points to that information arriving with the September 21 pre-sale, but for now there are no official figures and we're not going to make them up.

It also hasn't been clarified whether the AMC exclusivity will be limited to the United States or whether there will be any way to get one from Europe or Latin America, something that directly affects a large part of our community. Until there's confirmation, the safe bet is to assume that outside AMC theaters it won't be easy to get your hands on one.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz, we're clear on this: this bucket is the best thing the movie's campaign has done so far. Think about it from a content creator's perspective: it's an object that's begging for a clip, a thumbnail, a live reaction. Wearing Guile's hair while you commentate a Street Fighter 6 tournament is content that makes itself, and the marketing team knows it. Rhodes, who has spent years mastering the art of selling a character in the ring, is the perfect spokesperson.

That said, we also have to be critical. Making the bucket exclusive to one specific chain leaves millions of fans out, especially the Spanish-speaking community following the series from Europe and the Americas. If the studio wants this movie to work as a bridge between cinema and the competitive scene, restricting its most viral merchandise to the US market is a missed opportunity. And then there's the elephant in the room: a perfect bucket doesn't guarantee a movie that lives up to it. Street Fighter adaptations have a rough track record, and no amount of popcorn is going to make up for a poorly choreographed final fight.

With that said, we'd rather have marketing that laughs at itself than marketing that pretends to be solemn. If the movie strikes the same balance between tribute and humor as this bucket, we'll have something interesting to watch in October and, with luck, plenty of new players checking out the competitive community right after. That's the real prize.

Guile's hair now comes in an edible version and the pre-sale is right around the corner.
