Rockstar Games has kept every detail about GTA 6 under lock and key for years, but sometimes information slips out where you least expect it. As reported by Vida Extra, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said in an interview with Bloomberg that the platform is in frequent talks with Rockstar about its plans, and in that context he let slip a detail nobody had confirmed until now: GTA 6's multiplayer mode will arrive next year, that is, in 2027, after the base game launches.
This matters because Rockstar hasn't said a single official word about GTA 6 Online. All the promotional focus is on the story of Jason and Lucia in Vice City, with November 19 circled on calendars across half the planet. The fact that the head of the world's biggest streaming platform casually talks about a second major launch in 2027 confirms two things: online won't be available from day one, and Rockstar is already thinking about how to make the most of content creators in that second wave.

What you need to know
- Who said it: Dan Clancy, CEO of Twitch, in an interview with Bloomberg, as reported by Vida Extra.
- What he said: that the launch of GTA 6 will cause a huge stir, but that the following year's launch, with the arrival of multiplayer, will be even bigger.
- What it implies: GTA 6 Online would be split from the November 19 launch and pushed to 2027.
- What we don't know: neither the month nor whether it's the first half or the end of the year; Rockstar hasn't confirmed anything.
- Twitch's angle: the platform says it's working with Rockstar to figure out how to get its creators involved.
A launch in two stages
Separating the campaign from online is nothing new for Rockstar: with GTA V, multiplayer arrived weeks after the story, and with Red Dead Redemption 2 the online mode also kept players waiting. What changes now is the scale. If Clancy's words are accurate, the gap between the two launches isn't measured in weeks but stretches into the following year. That turns GTA 6 into two separate media events, each with its own wave of hype, streams and headlines.
For Take-Two it makes perfect sense. GTA Online has been its golden goose for over a decade, and arriving with a polished multiplayer, ready servers and a long-term content plan outweighs the rush to have it on day one. Staggering the launch also prevents online from swallowing up the conversation about the story, which is what Rockstar wants to sell first.
Why Twitch is talking and not Rockstar
The most striking thing about the leak is the source. That it's Twitch's CEO putting a rough window on online, rather than a Rockstar statement, says a lot about how the launch is being cooked up. Twitch needs GTA 6 as much as GTA 6 needs Twitch: the game will be the event of the year on the platform, and online, with its roleplay servers, group heists and communities, is what sustains the audience for years. Clancy talking about helping Rockstar involve creators points to partner programs, events and content designed specifically for streaming.
That said, it's worth remembering this is a third party's statement picked up in an interview, not an official confirmation. Rockstar remains completely silent and, until it speaks, the online launch date is a reasonable bet, not a done deal.
Our take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're taking the news with mixed feelings. On one hand, online arriving without a rush is a good sign for those of us who want a stable multiplayer, free of the server problems that have plagued almost every major launch in recent years. A broken GTA 6 Online in November would do more damage than a polished one in 2027. On the other hand, it's impossible not to think Rockstar is dragging this out: a full year between the campaign and online is a long time for a community that has spent more than a decade playing the same multiplayer.
For content creators and teams like ours, this scenario means planning in two phases. November will be the month of the campaign, story streams and the first videos, but the real community engine won't fire up until the following year. Anyone who makes a living from GTA content will have to squeeze everything out of the story and ride out the lull until online arrives, and there the key will be how Rockstar and Twitch bring creators in from day one. What really worries us is that the date is coming out through someone else's interview: a simple launch window announcement would be enough for players and creators to stop building their plans on rumors.
What do you think?
The debate is on: some would rather have a polished online mode even if it comes late, while others think a year's wait is too long. Drop by the team chat or our Discord and tell us: is it worth waiting until 2027 for GTA 6 Online, or did you want it from November 19?
