Liberty City, back on the scene

Since then, the series has moved to Los Santos with GTA V and, based on everything Rockstar has shown officially, GTA 6 is going with the state of Leonida and a modern-day Vice City. For Liberty City to reappear in a leak tied to the new game is, at the very least, striking.

The detail that this is an updated version is key. We're not talking about recycling an old city, but about a reinterpretation adapted to the technology and design of GTA 6. If the material is genuine, it would suggest Rockstar wants to reuse its legacy of cities as a way to expand the world without starting from scratch every time.

What a map DLC would mean

The precedents cut both ways. GTA IV received two single-player expansions set in Liberty City itself, so the idea of expanding a city with extra content is nothing new for the studio. On the other hand, GTA V never got the story DLC so many were hoping for, and all post-launch effort was focused on GTA Online. There were map expansions there, such as the island of Cayo Perico, but always in service of the multiplayer mode.

With that in mind, the reasonable question isn't whether Rockstar can make a Liberty City DLC, but what form it would take: a story chapter, a zone for the online mode, or a mix of both. The source offers no answer to that, and any claim one way or the other would be pure speculation.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we'll say it plainly: a leak is a leak. The GTA community has been through too many hype cycles built on images with no context, and Rockstar's track record with post-launch single-player content calls for caution. We'd love to see a revamped Liberty City, but we're not going to take for granted a DLC the company itself hasn't announced.

That said, if the plan exists, it's excellent news for the competitive and creator ecosystem. A growing map means new settings for roleplay servers, more variety for races and custom modes, and fresh material for streamers and editors who constantly need to refresh their content. The longevity of a game as a service is measured by how long it can keep surprising people, and an entire city is a very strong card to play.

What does concern us is the business model. If Liberty City arrives as a separate paid expansion or locked behind aggressive progression systems in the online mode, excitement can quickly turn into frustration. Rockstar has the chance to prove it learned from the criticism of GTA Online; here's hoping it takes it.
