GTA 6 promises "the next evolution of radio" and Rockstar drops hints about its music

Rockstar has made another move with GTA 6, though this time it did so almost under the radar. As reported by GameSpot, in the same statement in which the company unveiled GTA 6: The Album, a line slipped in at the very end that many people overlooked: the studio asks fans to stay tuned for more details about the game's music, mentions a "dynamic soundtrack" and promises what it describes as the next evolution of in-game radio.

It may sound like a minor detail, but in a series where music is as much a part of its identity as stolen cars or huge maps, any clue about how GTA 6 will sound matters. Grand Theft Auto's radio isn't decoration: it's how Rockstar builds atmosphere, humor and a sense of time and place. The fact that the studio is talking about an "evolution" suggests it won't just repeat the usual formula, and that opens the door to plenty of speculation.

What you need to know

  • Rockstar announced GTA 6: The Album and, at the end of the statement, teased that more information about the game's music is on the way.
  • The studio mentions a "dynamic soundtrack" and the "next evolution of in-game radio," without giving any further details.
  • There are unconfirmed rumors about radio stations hosted by DJ Khaled and Drake.
  • Another rumor, also unconfirmed, suggests that Spotify subscribers might be able to import their own playlists.
  • Spotify is already heavily promoting GTA 6, so the partnership between the two companies exists, though nobody knows how far it goes.

What Rockstar has said and what is just rumor

It's worth keeping the two clearly separate. The official part, as GameSpot tells it, is brief: there's an album, more music news is coming, the soundtrack will be dynamic and the radio will take a leap forward. No names, no specific features, no dates. Rockstar is an expert at dropping an ambiguous sentence and letting the community do the rest of the work, and that's exactly what's happening right now.

The unofficial part is far juicier. For a while now there's been a rumor that DJ Khaled would have his own station in the game, and that Drake might get another one. On top of that, some claim Rockstar will let Spotify subscribers import their playlists into GTA 6. None of this is confirmed, so take it for what it is: interesting background noise, not promises.

There is one visual hint that fuels the most appealing theory. In an earlier trailer, Lucia is seen wearing wireless earbuds, and a large part of the community read that detail as a sign that we'll be able to listen to music while walking around the city, not just behind the wheel. That would be a major change: in previous GTA games, stepping out of the car meant switching off the radio, and with a map as big as the one expected, that silence would be noticeable.

Spotify in the equation

What is plain to see is that Spotify has been promoting GTA 6 very visibly for some time. Two companies of that size pulling together on marketing is no coincidence, but it's a long way from there to a deep in-game integration. It could be a simple cross-promotion campaign, or it could be the prelude to something much bigger. For now, only Rockstar knows, and GameSpot makes it clear that the true scope of the partnership remains an open question.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz we've been saying for years that GTA's radio is one of the best inventions in modern gaming, so the idea of an "evolution" excites and worries us in equal measure. It excites us because listening to music on foot, with a soundtrack that reacts to what's happening on screen, could turn every stroll through the city into a movie scene. It worries us because the word "evolution," in the hands of a big corporation, sometimes means more integrations, more linked accounts and more subscription pop-ups.

For those of us who create content, there's a very practical angle: licensed music is the number one headache when uploading videos or streaming. If the ability to import your own playlists really does arrive, that doesn't solve the rights problem; it just shifts it onto the user. What we'd like to see is a clear, well-integrated option for claim-free music for streamers, designed from day one rather than patched in months after the community complains.

And for competitive players who spend hours in multiplayer, the question is a different one: will this change also reach online sessions or stay confined to the campaign? A custom radio during sessions with the team would be fantastic, but only if it doesn't become yet another source of microtransactions. Rockstar has a winning formula in its hands; all we ask is that it doesn't ruin it by squeezing it too hard.

What do you think?

We have a few stray sentences, rumors with some very big names and a pair of earbuds in a trailer. Not much, but enough to heat up the debate. Would you rather Rockstar kept its classic stations with their usual humor, or do you want to bring your own playlist into the game? Tell us in the team chat or on our Discord.
