GTA 6 would launch without multiplayer, and Twitch points to 2027 for the online mode

For the first time, GTA 6 multiplayer has a rough date on the table, even if Rockstar isn't the one who put it there. As reported by GameSpot, Dan Clancy, CEO of Twitch, said in an interview with Bloomberg (via IGN) that the game's online component would arrive at some point in 2027. The single-player campaign, which Rockstar has described as a solo experience, is still scheduled for November.
The statement matters because of who made it. Clancy wasn't speaking as a fan speculating on a forum, but as the person in charge of the world's largest streaming platform, and he made it clear that his team has spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about its plans. For a community like ours, living between competition and content creation, the difference between playing GTA 6 solo in November and getting the online mode months later is no small detail: it changes schedules, channel strategies and even event planning.
What you need to know
- Dan Clancy, CEO of Twitch, told Bloomberg that GTA 6 multiplayer would arrive in 2027, according to GameSpot.
- Rockstar has announced absolutely nothing about multiplayer support for GTA 6; officially it is still presented as a single-player experience.
- The base game launches in November and Clancy expects a big boost for Twitch at that point, but an even bigger one when the online mode goes live.
- GTA 5 didn't launch with multiplayer either: it debuted on September 17, 2013, and GTA Online arrived a few weeks later.
- What Clancy suggests is a considerably longer wait between the campaign and the online mode than there was last generation.
Twitch, Rockstar and a source that's no ordinary one
It's worth separating what's confirmed from what's interpretation. The only official facts are that GTA 6 arrives in November and that Rockstar defines it as a title focused on the individual player. Everything about multiplayer comes from Clancy's words: he acknowledged that Twitch will benefit from the launch because creators will dive into the game and stream it on his platform, and he theorized that the real jump in audience will come in 2027, when the online mode launches.
GameSpot points out that, coming from someone whose teams have been in direct contact with Rockstar, the comment sounds like more than a random guess. We share that reading, with some caveats: Clancy has an interest in projecting growth for Twitch, and a calendar with two big spikes in attention (November and 2027) is exactly what a CEO likes to tell investors. The information being credible doesn't make it a locked-in date.
The GTA 5 precedent and what would change now
The most useful precedent for understanding this news is GTA 5 itself. In 2013 the game launched first as a single-player experience and GTA Online went live weeks later, not months or a year afterwards. If the scenario Clancy outlines comes true, the gap between the two pieces would be noticeably wider this time, and that has direct consequences for those who make a living from online play.
| Entry | Campaign launch | Multiplayer arrival |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 | September 17, 2013 | A few weeks later |
| GTA 6 | November | 2027 (according to Dan Clancy, unconfirmed by Rockstar) |
The impact is twofold. For the competitive player, it means the GTA 6 online scene (crews, races, versus modes and everything the community builds on top) would take a while to get going, while the current game's GTA Online would remain the real playing field for longer. For the content creator, it means a two-phase launch: first the story wave, with spoilers and missions as the main material, and then a second wave when the online mode opens its doors and the long-form formats that sustain a channel for years start to appear.
Our take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom we see it with a mix of skepticism and practicality. Skepticism, because until Rockstar says a word, all of this is someone else's forecast: Clancy may have inside information, but he also has a business to sell. Practicality, because the scenario he describes is perfectly plausible and, if it does come true, it's better to have planned for it than to find out in December with your channel built around an online mode that doesn't exist.
For creators, a staggered launch isn't necessarily bad. Two spikes in attention are two opportunities to grow, and a GTA campaign has always been gold for streaming. The problem is the uncertainty: without an official date, it's impossible to lock in sponsorships, coordinate collaborations or decide when to go all in. Rockstar can afford the silence; small and medium-sized channels, not so much.
For the competitive side of the team, the message is clear: GTA 6 won't be a competitive arena at launch, and anyone wanting to build something serious will have to wait. If the online mode takes as long as Clancy suggests, it would be healthy for Rockstar to communicate it soon and clearly, instead of letting expectations be set by the head of an outside platform.
