Activision and Xbox used the Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast to take a proper look at the campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. According to IGN Spain, the new trailer takes the sub-series to a region it has never set foot in before and leans on an idea as classic as it is effective within the genre: yesterday's allies become today's enemies.
Beyond the spectacle, the trailer nails down the one thing the community really cares about: the game launches on October 23 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. For a team like Underworld Lordz, with players and creators spread across the Americas and Europe, that date marks the start of the most intense season of the year, the one everyone wants to be part of from day one.

What you need to know
- The campaign trailer was shown during the Xbox broadcast at TGS 2026.
- The story takes Modern Warfare to a region never before seen in the series.
- The narrative core is betrayal: characters who stop being friends and become adversaries.
- Release date: October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam).
- This trailer focuses exclusively on the campaign; there is nothing new about multiplayer in the video.
What changes from what we knew
A change of region is no small detail in Call of Duty. In this franchise, the campaign setting usually foreshadows the tone, the color palette and a good chunk of the environments that later show up in multiplayer and the large-scale modes. If Modern Warfare 4 opens up new territory, odds are that territory will also end up shaping how the maps we compete on for months feel. So even though this is a story trailer, it is worth watching it through the eyes of a ranked player.
The other key is betrayal. Modern Warfare has always played with moral ambiguity, with operators who are not clean-cut heroes and twists that test the squad's loyalty. Selling the trailer on the idea of friends turning into enemies suggests Activision wants to bring back that element of personal tension rather than settling for a string of action set pieces. It is a narrative bet that, done well, can deliver a memorable campaign; done poorly, it ends up as just another cliché.
Platforms and date
The material reported by IGN Spain makes the trio of platforms clear: PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. There is no mention of other storefronts or previous-generation consoles in this trailer, so we will have to wait for Activision to fill in the rest of the details. What is locked in is October 23 as launch day, with all three versions arriving at the same time.

Our take
Let's be clear: a campaign trailer sells excitement, but it does not answer the questions a competitive player is asking. We want to know how the online experience is going to work, what is happening with matchmaking, how cheaters are going to be dealt with and which maps will be available at launch. None of that shows up here, and that is exactly what decides whether Modern Warfare 4 becomes the flagship title of the season or just another entry the community drops within a few weeks. The story is all well and good, but this franchise's clock is measured in matches, not cutscenes.
That said, the new region strikes us as the best news in the trailer. The series needed some fresh air in its settings, and anything that avoids recycling the same old environments is welcome for those who create content and need visual variety to keep their audience hooked. If that change of territory translates into maps with their own identity, with clear lanes and without the design chaos that has dragged down other recent entries, we will have gained a lot.
One reservation remains: Call of Duty's annual cycle is still a problem. Every October a new game arrives that forces everyone to relearn the meta, reorganize teams and rebuild practice routines. For a team that competes and creates content, that is real wear and tear. We hope Modern Warfare 4 justifies that leap with real content and not just a good script.
