Activision and Infinity Ward have released the story recap trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, a piece designed to bring up to speed anyone who missed a chapter of the rebooted saga. As reported by IGN Spain, the video runs through the major plot beats from Modern Warfare (2019), through Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3, all the way to the new installment, which promises to take the story into uncharted territory.

The move matters for two reasons. First, the Call of Duty campaign is back in the conversation after recent entries saw the spotlight taken almost entirely by multiplayer and Warzone. Second, the launch is set for October 23 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, so we are in the home stretch of the marketing campaign and every piece Activision releases is a clue as to how it wants to position the game.

What you need to know

  • The trailer is a story recap: it covers the plot of Modern Warfare 2019, Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 before setting up the starting point of Modern Warfare 4.
  • Infinity Ward is once again leading development, as with most entries in the Modern Warfare sub-series.
  • According to the official description, the new installment takes the plot to unexplored regions, pointing to brand-new settings rather than a simple return to familiar maps.
  • Release date: October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam).
  • The source information comes from IGN Spain; the trailer offers no details on multiplayer or competitive modes.

Four games, one story

The Modern Warfare sub-series started from scratch in 2019 with a reboot that brought back Task Force 141, Price, Soap, Ghost and company, and pushed it toward a grittier tone closer to a contemporary military thriller. Modern Warfare 2 continued that thread and Modern Warfare 3 wrapped it up in a rather controversial way, with a campaign that a large part of the community considered short and rushed. Activision releasing a story recap now is, in practice, an admission that a lot of people got off the train at some point and need a nudge to get back on.

For campaign players, the video is the equivalent of a TV show's previously on.... For everyone else, it is a reminder that Modern Warfare 4 is neither a spin-off nor a fresh reboot, but the fourth piece of a trilogy that has now become a tetralogy. The shift toward unfamiliar territory also suggests Infinity Ward wants to move away from the settings we have already walked through several times over these years.

What changes for competitive players

Let's be clear: nothing shown in this trailer affects multiplayer or Warzone. This is pure campaign material. That said, the date does matter: with the launch in late October, the content cycle, weapon changes and Warzone integration will arrive right as many teams are locking in their fall schedule. If you compete or create content, it is worth marking the day and planning the switch of games ahead of time.

Another relevant detail is that the source only lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC as platforms. If that list is confirmed as final, the jump to current-gen consoles and PC only narrows the performance gap between platforms, something that is welcome in a competitive shooter and that the community has been asking for for a long time.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz we have mixed feelings. On one hand, we are glad Activision is giving the campaign visibility again: Modern Warfare 2019 proved the series can tell stories with real punch, and a good story mode is the best gateway for new players who later end up in multiplayer. On the other, a recap trailer little more than a month before launch smells like an operation to justify the number 4 on the box for an audience that, honestly, does not remember how Modern Warfare 3 ended.

What really interests us as a competitive team still has not been shown in this piece: netcode, movement, maps, the ranked system and how it will integrate with Warzone. Every year the competitive community repeats the same requests, and every year the launch marketing focuses on explosions and cutscenes. We would like to see Infinity Ward talking about latency and matchmaking with the same energy it puts into summarizing the plot.

For content creators, though, the campaign is an opportunity: the launch concentrates the audience, and the first few days of a new story always generate traffic. Our advice is to prepare campaign content for launch week and not play all your cards before knowing the real state of multiplayer.
