Physint switches sides: Sony drops Kojima's project and Xbox will publish it

Few stories this year will raise as many eyebrows as this one. According to Eurogamer Spain, Sony Interactive Entertainment has cancelled its agreement with Kojima Productions for Physint, and the game will end up being published by Xbox Game Studios. This is the project Hideo Kojima announced in January 2024, presented at the time as a collaboration with Sony, in other words, as a title conceived within the PlayStation ecosystem.

Why does it matter? Because Kojima is no ordinary developer: he is one of the few figures in the industry who can sell a game on his name alone. A project of his moving from Sony's hands to those of its direct competitor is not just a logo swap on the title screen. It is a sign of how the pieces are shifting between the major platforms, and for a community like ours, spread across PlayStation, Xbox and PC, it raises very concrete questions about where and how we will be able to play it.

What you need to know

  • Sony breaks the deal: Sony Interactive Entertainment has cancelled its collaboration with Kojima Productions on Physint, according to Eurogamer Spain.
  • Xbox picks up the baton: Xbox Game Studios will be the one to finally publish the game.
  • Origins of the project: Physint was announced in January 2024 as a joint project between Kojima Productions and Sony.
  • Plenty of unknowns: the available information does not detail the reasons for the split, the final platforms or a release date.

From a PlayStation project to an Xbox project

To understand the impact, it helps to remember where this started. Physint was presented as Kojima's return to the action and espionage genre that made him famous, and that announcement was made with Sony as partner. All this time, the general perception was clear: this was a title tied to PlayStation. Having Xbox Game Studios publish it now completely changes that reading.

Kojima Productions is an independent studio and has already shown it is not tied to anyone: it has worked with Sony and has also had projects with Xbox. The striking thing here is not that Kojima is collaborating with Microsoft, but that a deal already announced publicly with Sony gets cancelled and the same game ends up under the competitor's umbrella. Moves like that rarely happen without friction behind the scenes, although, we stress, the source does not explain the reasons and we are not going to make them up.

What changes and who it affects

The first thing that changes is platform expectations. If we previously took for granted that Physint would come to PS5 as a priority, the logic now points to the Xbox ecosystem and, very probably, PC, although none of this is confirmed in the source information. Players who only own a PlayStation are the ones who most need to keep an eye on the upcoming official announcements.

It also affects both companies' strategies. For Xbox, adding a Kojima project is a huge boost to its image at a time when it needs strong arguments for its catalogue. For Sony, losing a title it had proudly announced is, at the very least, a communications setback. And for content creators, the game changes radar: it goes from being a possible PlayStation exclusive to being one of Microsoft's biggest cards, with everything that implies for visibility, campaigns and early access.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz we see this move with a mix of curiosity and scepticism. Curiosity because Kojima with creative freedom and a publisher eager to show off usually delivers interesting results, and Physint is exactly the kind of game many of us had been asking for for years. Scepticism because a project that changes publisher midway rarely does so for calm reasons, and those changes end up affecting timelines, scope or both. Nobody should expect this to speed up the release.

As a team with players on several platforms, we are also concerned about fragmentation. Every time a title of this calibre jumps from one ecosystem to another, part of the community is left out or has to spend more to keep up. This is not a criticism of Xbox for signing the game, it is a criticism of the model in general: competitive players and creators need predictability to plan content, tournaments and hardware purchases, and announcements that get undone two years later do not help at all.

That said, if Microsoft keeps its trend of also releasing its major launches on PC, the net result for our community could be positive: more people will be able to play it from day one without depending on a specific console. But that is an expectation, not a fact, and until platforms and a date are confirmed we would rather not sell hype.

What do you think?

Kojima switches sides and Physint becomes an Xbox Game Studios game. Some see it as a win for Microsoft, others as a warning that the project has had problems. Tell us in the team chat or on our Discord: are you glad Physint is coming to Xbox and, presumably, PC, or does it bother you that a game announced with PlayStation ends up in the competition's hands?
