Physint: Kojima's return to espionage may not arrive until 2030

Hideo Kojima already has his next destination after roaming the post-apocalyptic wastelands of Death Stranding, and it is not one project but two. According to GameSpot, both will be published by Xbox, and one of them is Physint, the title that sees the Japanese designer return to the territory that made him a legend: tactics, espionage and action. The detail that cools things down is that Kojima himself has admitted the earliest launch window could be as far away as 2030.

Why do we care about a game we might not touch for years? Because Kojima is the name that defined stealth in video games, and any move of his toward that genre is, de facto, an event for the community that grew up on infiltration missions, radars and cardboard boxes. Physint is the promise that this style of design is back in the hands of the person who invented it, even if for now we have more questions than answers.

What you need to know

  • There is no release date. Kojima has made it clear that the earliest window could stretch to 2030.
  • Very early stage of development: in 2025 Kojima himself explained that he had only just started on his horror game OD and that Physint was in a "conceptual" phase.
  • First reveal: the project was unveiled during PlayStation's State of Play in January 2024.
  • Xbox steps in as publisher and is collaborating on development, which points to a launch on PC and on Microsoft's next console, known as Project Helix.
  • Likely a next-generation game: with such a distant horizon, it only makes sense for it to arrive on hardware that is not yet on the market.

From Death Stranding to espionage: a change of course with an uncertain timeline

Physint is presented as a return to Kojima's creative roots. After two Death Stranding entries focused on reconnecting a broken world, the designer is now betting on a tactical espionage action project, exactly the combination of words any infiltration veteran wants to hear. GameSpot stresses that details are trickling out as development progresses, so what exists today is more a statement of intent than a game that can be shown.

What has changed in a tangible way is the corporate landscape. Physint was revealed at a PlayStation event in January 2024, and now it is Xbox that is publishing and helping to develop it alongside Kojima's other project. That reshuffles the platform map: PC and the future Xbox look like the safe bet, according to the outlet, although no further details have been confirmed. The known timeline stands as follows:

Who does this affect?

In the short term, almost nobody: there is nothing to play or review. In the medium term, everyone following the Xbox and PC ecosystem, because Physint is shaping up to be one of the flagships of Microsoft's next generation. And in the long term, the stealth and tactical action scene, a genre that has gone a long time without a benchmark setting the pace.

Our take

Let's be honest: unveiling a game six years before its most optimistic window is, above all, a marketing move. We understand the value of Kojima's name and we know his community will wait as long as it takes, but here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom we find it hard to get excited about a title that, in the middle of 2026, we can only say exists on paper and has already changed publisher. For content creators, this translates into years of videos titled "everything we know" with practically nothing inside.

That said, there are reasons for hope. Kojima has more than enough credit in the genre, and the return to tactical espionage is potentially the best possible news for players looking for mechanical depth instead of live services. If Xbox gives him the resources and time the project needs, Physint could become the compelling reason to make the jump to Project Helix when it arrives.

What we ask for is simple: less smoke and more game. If the studio is going to keep us waiting until 2030, Physint's next appearances should bring mechanics and not just pretty phrases. The competitive stealth community has been waiting far too long for a worthy heir, and hype alone does not fill a scene.

What do you think?

An early reveal generates anticipation, but also fatigue. Tell us in the team chat or on our Discord: is it worth knowing about Physint this far in advance, or would you rather Kojima had kept it under wraps until he had something playable to show?
