Why does this matter for anyone who plays seriously? Because Pokémon GO is a calendar game. Players who plan ahead which days they'll go out hunting, which Power Spots they'll hit and which week they'll focus on a specific Pokémon get far more out of it than those who improvise. It's reasonable to assume the Ghost/Dark-type Pokémon will be one of the main stars of the celebration, both in its Dynamax form and its Mega Evolution, although the exact breakdown of Halloween raids, hours and rewards has not yet been detailed in the information available. It's best to wait for the full official communication before taking anything else for granted.

What is clear is the structure of the month: a predictable Max Battle rotation, a flagship event the community knows all too well, and the promise of bonuses and raids to complete the picture. Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we have mixed feelings. On one hand, the preview is useful and we like that Niantic gives firm dates well in advance: competitive players can organise their outings, coordinate groups for the Power Spots and decide which week to concentrate their resources on. Content creators also gain time to prepare guides, streams and material before each Dynamax Pokémon enters the rotation. That's looking after the active community, and it deserves credit.

On the other hand, let's be honest: the October formula is starting to feel like a template. Halloween as the centrepiece, a Ghost-type Pokémon as the headliner and a weekly Dynamax rotation that seems designed more to keep up the daily login rhythm than to offer anything genuinely new. Sobble, Sizzlipede and Rookidee are decent additions to Max Battles, but none of them will shake up the meta or worry anyone who already has solid teams. We'd like to see the most beloved event of the year dare to do something more ambitious than repeat the recipe with a different Pokémon in the wrapper.

Even so, the month has the makings of a fun one if it's rounded out well. Dynamax Sableye landing during Halloween week is a smart timing decision, and if the bonuses deliver, October could be a great time to hit the streets with the team again. Our practical recommendation: save the last week of the month for the Power Spots and don't burn through all your Max Particles too early.
