Team Ninja has finally set a date for Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, the follow-up to its soulslike action game set in Three Kingdoms-era China. According to IGN Spain, the game will launch on March 4, 2027 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, and it will also be available from day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. IGN Spain adds that the announcement comes with a surprise, although the excerpt we were able to consult does not go into detail about what that is.

Why does this matter to us at Underworld Lordz? Because the first Wo Long was one of those games that split the community: for some, the deflect-and-morale formula was the freshest thing the genre had seen in years; for others, it fell short of the studio's own Nioh games. A sequel with a locked-in date, a simultaneous launch on four platforms and a direct entry into Game Pass is, above all, a statement of intent: this time, Team Ninja wants the game to reach far more people from minute one.

What you need to know

  • Release date: March 4, 2027.
  • Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, all on the same day.
  • Game Pass: available from day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
  • Studio: Team Ninja, the developer behind the Ninja Gaiden series and the first Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.
  • Surprise: IGN Spain mentions an additional reveal in the announcement; we will expand on it as soon as we have confirmed details.

What changes from the first Wo Long

The most striking part of the announcement is the distribution strategy. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty already launched on Game Pass, which gave it a huge player base in its first few days, with the side effect that much of the discussion on social media was driven by people who had not paid the usual sixty dollars or euros. Repeating the move with the sequel suggests it worked for Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo: the game becomes an instant conversation, and that is worth its weight in gold in a genre where word of mouth is everything.

The other new development is the inclusion of Nintendo Switch 2 in the list of launch platforms. The first Wo Long never had a Nintendo version, so there is an entirely new audience here. For a game that demands pattern reading and fast deflect reactions, the big question will be how the handheld version holds up in terms of frame rate and input latency. There are no half measures here: a soulslike running at an unstable 30 fps is a worse soulslike.

Who this affects

For the team's competitive players, the timing is what matters: March 2027 is a window with relatively little noise, which leaves room to organize progression races, no-hit boss challenges and build comparisons without clashing with the big end-of-year releases. For content creators, day one on Game Pass guarantees an audience: plenty of people will have the game installed on launch day and will be looking for guides, routes and mechanic breakdowns from the very first hour.

Our take

We are glad Team Ninja has not rested on its laurels. The first Wo Long had a brilliant combat system at its core, with deflecting and morale management, but it lost steam in level structure and enemy variety, and many players dropped it before seeing the best it had to offer. A sequel has the chance to fix exactly that: if Wings of Ember keeps the aggressive combat and improves the stage design and difficulty curve, it could become the go-to soulslike for those who want speed rather than just endurance.

That said, we are skeptical about the way it is being communicated. Announcing a date with a "surprise" attached is fine for a headline, but what the community needs is concrete information: performance on each platform, whether co-op will be available at launch, how crossplay will work between PC, consoles and Switch 2, and whether post-launch paid content will be as aggressive as in the first game. For a team that runs sessions across multiple platforms, crossplay is not an extra; it is the difference between being able to play together or not.

And a word of warning to creators: the game being on Game Pass is an opportunity, but it also means saturation. Everyone will make the first boss guide. Anyone who wants to stand out will have to go a step further: frame analysis of deflects, weapon comparisons, speed routes. That is the content that keeps people coming back.

What do you think?

The first Wo Long left mixed opinions, and now the sequel is arriving with a fixed date, four platforms and Game Pass from day one.
