Call of Duty Breaks the Cycle: Activision Confirms a New Sub-Series in Development

Activision has officially confirmed something that had been circulating as a rumour for a while: Call of Duty is preparing a new sub-series. As reported by Vandal, the publisher is already working on a project that will open a different chapter, with new adventures, its own characters and a different historical setting, separate from the two lines that have carried the franchise for the past two decades: Modern Warfare and Black Ops.

The announcement comes at a sensitive moment for the brand, just days before the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which releases on 23 October. That is precisely why Activision has chosen not to go into detail. But simply acknowledging it already matters: it is the first official sign that the series wants to break out of the back-and-forth it has been stuck in for far too long, and that directly affects the entire competitive and creator ecosystem built around it.

What you need to know

  • Activision officially confirms it is developing a new Call of Duty sub-series, with new adventures, characters and a new historical setting.
  • Tyler Bahl, head of marketing, has not shared further details so as not to steal the spotlight from the imminent launch.
  • Modern Warfare 4 is this year's Call of Duty and arrives on 23 October.
  • According to insider GhostOfHope, the new sub-series would be the 2027 release, would be handled by Sledgehammer Games and would be set in the present day.

Two decades of swinging between Modern Warfare and Black Ops

To understand why this is news, you have to look back. For around twenty years, Call of Duty has relied on alternating between its two big brands. There have been exceptions — Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare, WWII and Vanguard — but they have worked more as detours than as sustained bets. None of them ever established itself as a stable third pillar of the franchise.

What Activision is describing now sounds different: not a one-off experiment, but the start of a sub-series, with the stated intention of building something with continuity. That is the key difference from previous attempts, at least on paper.

What is confirmed and what is not

It is worth separating the official information from the leaks, because much of what we know still comes from unconfirmed sources:

The insider's track record works in their favour: two years ago they revealed that Modern Warfare 4 would be the 2026 release, and that is exactly what happened. It guarantees nothing, but it is a good reason to take the rest of the leak seriously.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz we welcome the news with enthusiasm, but also with caution. The alternation between Modern Warfare and Black Ops has produced some huge games, but it has also created a sense of a closed loop: every year you more or less know what you are going to be sold. A new sub-series is a chance to rethink movement, match pacing and map design without carrying the legacy or expectations of a specific brand. For competitive players that could be gold… or a leap into the unknown if the game launches without a solid foundation.

There is one detail that worries us. If the present-day setting is confirmed, the risk is obvious: that the "new" thing ends up being Modern Warfare under another name. A sub-series only makes sense if it brings its own identity, and that is measured on the controller, not in the trailer. Activision talking about new characters and a different historical setting is promising, but until we see systems, weapons and modes, it is purely a statement of intent. And the marketing silence, while understandable to protect the MW4 launch, leaves the field open for leaks to shape the narrative.

For content creators, a new brand means curiosity, searches and audience spikes at launch. It also means uncertainty: if it does not catch on, its life on streams and in competitive play could be short, as happened with other detours in the series. Our advice is clear: enjoy Modern Warfare 4, but keep an eye on 2027, because it could be the year Call of Duty truly changes the rules.

What do you think?

A third sub-series could refresh the franchise or dilute it even further. We have given our opinion, now it is your turn: do you think Call of Duty really needs a new sub-series, or would you rather it keep cycling between Modern Warfare and Black Ops?
