Capcom buries the paid edit vouchers for your hunter in Monster Hunter Wilds

Capcom has backtracked on one of the most unpopular decisions in Monster Hunter Wilds. As reported by Vida Extra, the Japanese company has announced on the game's Steam page that edit vouchers will cease to exist as a product: starting December 3 they will be removed from all digital storefronts and, in exchange, every player will receive 10 vouchers to edit their hunter and another 10 for their Palico, at no cost.

The change matters because, until now, altering the look of your character or your feline companion was not a feature naturally built into the experience, but an extra you had to pay for. It was the microtransaction most heavily criticized by the community, and the fact that Capcom has decided to remove it right before Ascendance, the expansion planned for 2027, says a lot about how the conversation around the game has gone over these past months.

What you need to know

  • Goodbye to paid vouchers: Capcom has announced on Steam that edit vouchers are being removed from the catalog.
  • Key date: from December 3 they will no longer be sold on any digital storefront.
  • Free compensation: 10 character edit vouchers and 10 Palico edit vouchers for every player.
  • Timing: the move comes ahead of Ascendance, the expansion announced for 2027.
  • Source: the underlying information comes from Vida Extra, based on Capcom's official announcement.

From controversial microtransaction to free gift

The story of edit vouchers in Wilds is that of a system that never fit with what the series is about. Monster Hunter has always revolved around building your hunter: armor, weapons, style and, of course, their face and your Palico's. Letting you create your character in exhaustive detail at the start and then charging you to tweak it later was a contradiction the community refused to let slide. Vida Extra describes it as the game's worst monetization, and that is no exaggeration: it was a toll on a cosmetic feature that other games treat as a given.

With the Steam announcement, Capcom closes that chapter. The vouchers are being pulled from the stores and every player gets a free bundle. Here is how it breaks down:

Voucher typeFree amountStore status
Character edit (hunter)10Removed from December 3
Palico edit10Removed from December 3

What changes for players

In practice, anyone who wants to change the look of their hunter or their Palico will have room to do so without spending a cent. Ten uses each is not an infinite number, but it is considerably more than most people need in a normal playthrough. What the source does not detail is what happens once those vouchers run out, or whether there will be another way to get more down the line, so it is worth waiting for Capcom to clear up those loose ends. What is clear is the message: the company has understood that this system was doing more damage to its reputation than it was bringing in revenue.

The timing is no coincidence either. With Ascendance on the horizon for 2027, Capcom wants the conversation around Wilds to be about content, not monetization. Cleaning house before asking people to pay again for an expansion is a logical play.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom we welcome the decision, but we are not going to applaud as if Capcom had done us a favor. Charging to edit your character should never have existed in the first place, and removing it is fixing a mistake, not an act of generosity. The community has been calling it out for months, and what we are seeing here is a company reacting to pressure, not getting ahead of it.

For competitive players the impact is limited: nobody wins a hunt by having a better-looking hunter. But for content creators, streamers and anyone who makes a living showing their character on screen, the freedom to change your look without paying is genuinely relevant. Rebuilding your hunter for a new series, adapting your Palico for an event or simply trying out a different style are all things you can now do without your wallet entering the equation. That kind of friction is exactly what annoys people who produce content on a constant basis the most.

Our stance is simple: this is the right direction, but the fix remains partial as long as there is a cap on uses and it is unclear what comes next. If Capcom wants to fully win back trust, the consistent move would be to make editing a truly free feature, with no vouchers of any kind. Anything else is a well-intentioned patch.

What do you think?

Capcom has course-corrected, but with a limit of 10 vouchers per type and without yet explaining what comes next. We want to know how you see it from the community: do these free vouchers feel like enough, or do you think character editing should be unlimited and unconditional?
