Deadlock breaks its ceiling: 228,086 players in a Valve game that isn't even out yet

Valve has once again done what it does best: move hundreds of thousands of players without spending a single tweet. Deadlock, its third-person MOBA, has just hit its all-time peak of concurrent players at 228,086 users, as reported by Vida Extra. That figure makes it the fifth-best number on Steam over the last 24 hours, ahead of heavyweights like Apex Legends, The Witcher 3 Remastered and EA Sports FC 27. And note this detail: the game is still invite-only.
Why does it matter? Because the trigger for this surge was a massive patch, not a marketing campaign or an official launch. The game's Steam page hasn't been touched since August 2024, and all relevant communication happens through a website where Valve posts its major updates. The fact that a title in those conditions can go toe to toe with established games says a lot about the studio's pull and the appetite for an action MOBA with shooter pacing.

What you need to know
- New record: Deadlock reached 228,086 concurrent players, its all-time peak.
- Top 5 on Steam over the last 24 hours, ahead of Apex Legends, The Witcher 3 Remastered and EA Sports FC 27.
- Still invite-only: there's no open launch and no announced date.
- The spike is driven by a massive patch, in line with the big updates Valve has been releasing since February 2025.
- Minimal communication: the Steam page hasn't been updated since August 2024; changes are detailed on the game's official website.
A slow-cooked development (very slow)
Deadlock's story is one of a project Valve has taken its time with. The first leaks date back to early 2018, when it was circulating under the codename Citadel. Years went by until, in the first half of 2024, it became available by invitation to interested players, and the official announcement didn't come until August 2024. Since February 2025, the game has been receiving sweeping updates that, as Vida Extra points out, go beyond tweaking numbers: sometimes they overhaul systems that seemed locked in.
| When | Milestone |
|---|---|
| Early 2018 | First leaks under the name Citadel |
| First half of 2024 | Invite-only access for interested players |
| August 2024 | Official announcement and last update to the Steam page |
| February 2025 | Sweeping updates begin |
| Now | Massive patch and a record 228,086 concurrent players |
Few companies can afford this luxury. Most studios need to monetize early, lock in the design and ship. Valve, with Steam as a safety net, can keep a multiplayer game in testing for years, iterate without commercial pressure and let the community handle the word-of-mouth. The result is a game that grows through patches and buzz.
Our take
Here at Underworld Lordz, we're clear on this: Deadlock is no longer an experiment, it's a phenomenon, and the competitive scene should start taking it seriously. Beating Apex Legends on an ordinary day, with no trailer, no release date and a barrier to entry, is a very strong signal. If you're a competitive player and haven't put hours into it yet, now is a good time: the communities that form early are the ones that go on to shape the meta, run the first tournaments and dominate the top spots once the game opens up.
That said, we also need to be critical. A game that overhauls entire systems from one patch to the next is shaky ground for serious competition. What you master today might not exist tomorrow, and that punishes anyone who invests hundreds of hours into perfecting a strategy. On top of that, Valve's opacity has its ugly side: a Steam page frozen since 2024 and no public roadmap make it very hard for teams and organizers to plan in the medium term. Secrecy builds hype, sure, but it doesn't build a competitive circuit.
For content creators, on the other hand, the outlook is juicy. Every massive patch is a perfect excuse for analysis videos, guides and "first impressions" streams, and a peak this size proves there's an audience waiting. Our advice: ride the wave, but don't tie your whole channel to a game Valve could keep reinventing for years.
What do you think?
Deadlock still has no official launch, yet it's already playing in Steam's big leagues. Is it time for Underworld Lordz to field a roster in Valve's game, or would you rather wait for the design to settle down? Drop by the team chat or our Discord and let us know: would you sign up to compete in Deadlock right now?
