GTA 6 and PC: Take-Two admits the platform matters more and more in its plans

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches in November on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the question that keeps coming up in every Discord server, every chat room and every stream is the same: when will we be able to play it on PC? Rockstar isn't launching it on PC at release, we already knew that. What's new is that Strauss Zelnick, head of Take-Two, spoke during the company's virtual shareholder meeting about how he sees the platform, and his words give a pretty clear hint about where things are heading.

As reported by GameSpot, based on coverage from GamesRadar, Zelnick explained that Take-Two's philosophy is to publish its games on any platform where a relevant audience exists, and added that PC is gaining weight within the company over time. He didn't mention GTA 6 directly, but for a community that has spent years asking for a simultaneous launch, every statement of this kind reads like a signal. And it matters because it affects how the competitive scene is organised, the creators who make a living streaming, and the players who have to decide whether to buy a console just to avoid being left out.

What you need to know

  • GTA 6 launches in November exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no PC version announced for launch.
  • Zelnick spoke at Take-Two's shareholder meeting, not at a Rockstar event: his comments describe the company's overall strategy, not the specific plan for GTA 6.
  • Take-Two's rule is to launch on any platform with a significant audience, and PC, in his own words, is increasingly important to the company.
  • The GTA 5 precedent: it released on consoles in September 2013 and arrived on PC in April 2015, in other words, 18 months later.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 followed the same pattern: consoles first in 2018 and then PC, although the source doesn't detail how long it took.

Rockstar's pattern: consoles first, PC later

You don't need to be a fortune teller to understand why nobody in the industry seriously considers that GTA 6 will go without a PC version. Rockstar's last two major releases, Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013 and Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, came out first on console and then made the jump to PC. In the case of GTA 5, the wait was a year and a half: from September 2013 to April 2015. That port, moreover, arrived with technical improvements and ended up becoming the reference version for content creators, modders and GTA Online players for almost a decade.

What Zelnick puts on the table is that this strategy isn't a whim, it's a calculation: Take-Two goes where there's a paying audience. And if PC is increasingly important to its bottom line, the logical conclusion is that the window between console and PC will tend to shrink, not grow. That said, it's worth stressing: the executive gave no dates, confirmed nothing about GTA 6 and didn't even name it. Everything else is interpretation, as reasonable as you like, but interpretation.

Who this wait affects

For a casual player, waiting a few months is an annoyance. For a content creator or a competitive team, it's a different story. Anyone building their community around a game needs to be there on day one, and if the only way to do that is with a console, the purchase decision has already been made by Rockstar, not by you. It also affects those who play from regions where consoles are expensive or hard to get, something we know well in Latin America: PC is often the real gateway to the game, not the alternative.

On the other hand, there's an argument in favour of the staggered release: the PC port usually arrives more polished, with more graphics options and with the modding ecosystem waiting at the door. If the PC version of GTA 6 keeps that tradition, those who wait will probably get the best version of the game. The question is how long you can hold out watching everyone else play it before you.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz we believe Zelnick's words are good news, but with caveats. Having the head of Take-Two acknowledge out loud that PC carries more and more weight is a change of tone compared to the era when PC seemed like a secondary market for Rockstar. However, saying it at a shareholder meeting is not the same as announcing a date, and until there's an official statement, we're exactly where we were: GTA 6 launches on consoles, full stop.

Our criticism is simple: if PC is so important, the consistent move would be to launch there from day one. We understand the technical and commercial reasons for the staggered release, but for a creator scene already thinking about how to cover the biggest launch of the decade, leaving out a huge part of the audience for months is a decision that costs players, not Take-Two. To those who play competitively, we recommend not buying a console just out of day-one anxiety without first weighing whether you're really going to build something around the game from that moment on.

That said, the GTA 5 precedent reassures us on the fundamentals: the port will come, and if Rockstar repeats the play, it will arrive loaded with improvements. The question isn't if, but when, and every statement like this shortens the wait a little in our heads, even if there's still nothing written on the calendar.

What do you think?

We'll keep watching every move from Rockstar and Take-Two, but we want to know how you see it from your side: are you going to shell out for a console to play GTA 6 in November, or would you rather wait for the PC port even if it takes a year and a half like it did with GTA 5? Tell us in the team chat or on our Discord.
