GTA 6 and Switch 2: the half-open door Nintendo could walk through

There's just over a month to go before Grand Theft Auto VI hits stores and, for now, the platform list is locked: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and nothing else. Even so, according to Movistar eSports, the possibility of the game eventually landing on Switch 2 is still on the table. The quote accompanying the news sets the tone: "Nintendo is for ages 5 to 95".

It may seem like a minor detail amid the noise of a launch this big, but it isn't. We're talking about the most anticipated game of the generation and a console whose brand is associated, rightly or wrongly, with a family audience. If that door really opens, it changes the conversation about which games fit in Nintendo's ecosystem and about how many people will get to experience Vice City in its early years.

What you need to know

  • Imminent launch: GTA VI is just over a month away from release.
  • Confirmed platforms: for now, only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Switch 2 not ruled out: the report published by Movistar eSports suggests that a version for Nintendo's console hasn't been ruled out.
  • The underlying argument: Nintendo isn't just for kids, but for players "from 5 to 95".

Why this quote carries so much weight

For years, the debate over mature games on Nintendo consoles has revolved around two ideas: hardware power and audience profile. The quote in the headline goes straight at the second one. Saying that Nintendo is for people aged 5 to 95 is arguing that its user base is as broad as any other platform's and that a mature-rated title doesn't feel out of place there.

That doesn't mean there's an announcement or a timeline. The source doesn't mention dates, versions in development or specific deals. What it does convey is an attitude: the possibility isn't being shut down. And in an industry where releases of this scale are planned years in advance, someone leaving that window open at this stage is already a signal worth paying attention to.

Who it affects and what would change

The first group affected is obvious: people who mainly play on Switch 2 and don't own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S. For that audience, GTA VI simply doesn't exist today. A version for Nintendo's hybrid would open the series up to a huge community, including those who play in handheld mode on commutes or trips, something especially relevant in markets across the Americas and Europe where not everyone owns a home console.

The second group is content creators. A GTA on Switch 2 would be a talking point for months on its own: performance comparisons, handheld gameplay tests, debates about graphical downgrades. And on the online side, any additional version raises the question of how each platform's communities would coexist.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we think the quote is right at its core, even if it sounds like a slogan. Nintendo's audience stopped being just kids a long time ago, and those who grew up with its consoles are now adults who also want to play the big releases without having to buy another device. Denying them GTA VI over brand image would be outdated.

That said, we have to be critical: an open door isn't a game on the store shelf. Until there's something concrete, this is a statement of intent and little more. And if it does arrive, the key question for competitive players won't be whether the version exists, but in what state. A cut-down port, with performance drops or without online parity, would be worse than not having it at all, because it would leave that community at a clear disadvantage compared to everyone else.

For creators, the picture is clearer: any move in this direction will generate content, debate and viewers. But it's important not to overhype it. Talking about GTA VI on Switch 2 as if it were imminent, given the information available today, would be misleading the community. Our advice: stay cautious, and keep an eye on what happens after the PS5 and Xbox launch.
