Heroes of the Storm wakes up: Xal'atath is the first new hero in almost six years

Nobody saw it coming. In the middle of BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard announced that Heroes of the Storm is getting a brand-new playable character: Xal'atath, the Harbinger of the Void, one of the figures that has gained the most weight lately in the Warcraft universe. According to Vandal, the hero will officially arrive on September 28, and as of today, September 14, she can already be tried out on the Public Test Realm (PTR).
The news matters because it breaks a drought that looked permanent. The last hero to join the roster was Hogger, in December 2020, and in July 2022 Blizzard itself announced that the game was moving into maintenance mode: rotations, fixes and minor tweaks, but nothing resembling new content. Almost six years later, a MOBA that many had written off has something to announce again on the company's main stage.

What you need to know
- Who's coming: Xal'atath, the Harbinger of the Void, a character of growing importance in Warcraft.
- When: full release on September 28, 2026; available on the PTR from September 14.
- Why it's news: she is the first new hero since Hogger, who was added in December 2020.
- Key background: in July 2022 Blizzard announced the game was entering maintenance mode.
- Where it was announced: at BlizzCon 2026, as one of the least expected surprises of the event.
From maintenance mode to the BlizzCon stage
To understand the impact, you have to remember where the game comes from. For years, Heroes of the Storm was Blizzard's bid to compete in the MOBA space with a more accessible approach, shorter matches and maps with their own objectives. It had its competitive scene, its tournaments and a very loyal community, but the July 2022 announcement made it clear the company had no plans to keep investing in it beyond the bare minimum needed to keep it running.
Xal'atath showing up now changes the conversation. This isn't a balance patch or a recycled skin: it's a new playable character, with everything that entails in ability design, balance testing and, above all, as a political signal to the community. Blizzard wouldn't have spent minutes of its annual conference on a game it considers closed. The choice of character doesn't seem random either: Xal'atath is one of the most prominent figures in recent Warcraft, which suggests the idea is to ride the momentum of the main universe to draw eyes back to the Nexus.
What we know and what we don't
The source confirms the PTR arrival date and the full release date, along with the context of the content drought. What we don't have, for now, is any information on whether this addition is a one-off or the start of a broader roadmap. The hero's ability kit hasn't been detailed either, nor whether she'll come with deeper changes to maps, systems or modes. Worth keeping in mind before counting your chickens: one swallow doesn't make a summer, but after almost six years, one swallow is already a lot.
Our take
From the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we'll say it plainly: this is good news, and at the same time news that calls for caution. For competitive players, a new hero in a meta that had been frozen for years is pure oxygen. Those who kept playing Heroes in maintenance mode know every interaction by heart, and Xal'atath's arrival forces a rethink of compositions, ban priorities and map routes. In any competitive game, that's what keeps a scene alive.
For content creators the opportunity is even clearer. An unexpected announcement at BlizzCon generates curiosity, and curiosity generates clicks. Whoever jumps onto the PTR today and puts out guides, ability breakdowns or comparisons with other heroes will be first to reach an audience that, for years, had nothing new to watch. It's a small window, barely two weeks until the full release, and in the content world being first counts for a lot.
That said, let's not forget July 2022. Blizzard made a very harsh decision with this community and stood by it for years. A single character doesn't erase that, and it would be naive to believe the game is a priority again just because. The real question is whether this is the first step of a plan or a one-time nod cashing in on Xal'atath's weight in Warcraft. Until we see a second announcement, the sensible thing is to enjoy the moment with our feet on the ground and without buying promises nobody has made yet.
