The MOBA genre has a new contender. As reported by IGN España, March of Giants is a free-to-play MOBA for PC that will be distributed through Steam. According to the outlet, Ubisoft has already shown a first look at its gameplay. The IGN España piece claims the game has an "ace up its sleeve" to help it stand out and describes it as an original and interesting idea. It also lists it among the upcoming free-to-play releases worth keeping an eye on.

Why should you care? Because few genres are as hard to break into as the MOBA. The big names have spent years soaking up players, tournaments and streaming hours. Any newcomer needs more than good graphics to survive. If March of Giants really does have a standout mechanic, it could carve out a space the competitive ecosystem has been asking for for a while. If it doesn't, it will join the long list of attempts that fell by the wayside.

What you need to know

  • Genre and model: it's a free-to-play MOBA.
  • Platform: PC, distributed through Steam.
  • First look: according to IGN España, Ubisoft has revealed details of its gameplay with a short gameplay preview.
  • The hook: IGN España highlights an original idea that could be its main weapon for setting itself apart.
  • What's missing: the information available so far is preliminary. The source confirms no dates or figures.

A tough genre to crack

The underlying problem isn't new. The MOBA is one of the most saturated and, at the same time, most closed-off genres out there. MOBA players often invest hundreds or thousands of hours into mastering a champion, learning routes and memorizing objective timers. All that accumulated knowledge builds huge loyalty and makes switching games very costly. That's why most new titles in the genre fail to hold on to their community beyond the first few weeks.

In that context, the approach behind March of Giants makes sense. Being free removes the first barrier to entry, and being on Steam gives it instant visibility on the platform where a large share of the PC audience lives. But neither of those is a real advantage over the competition, because its direct rivals are also free and easy to access. The difference will have to come from the design, and that's where the "ace up its sleeve" mentioned by IGN España comes in.

Who it could affect

If the game delivers, the first to take notice will be veteran players tired of the same old meta who are looking for something fresh without giving up strategic depth. Content creators too, since a new game gives them the chance to establish themselves ahead of everyone else with guides, analysis and commentated matches. And, in the medium term, teams and tournament organizers, who are always on the lookout for new competitive scenes to get into from the very start.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz we've seen too many MOBAs rise and fall to get excited over a trailer alone. Having an original idea is a good starting point, but it isn't enough. What keeps a MOBA alive is balance, visual clarity in team fights, matchmaking that works and a steady stream of updates. None of that can be judged from a gameplay preview. Until we have the controller, or rather the mouse, in our hands, our stance is one of cautious curiosity.

That said, we like that someone is daring to enter this genre with a concept that, on paper at least, aims to be different rather than just another copy. For the Spanish-speaking competitive scene, a new MOBA with a standout mechanic could be a real opportunity. Hierarchies aren't set, knowledge is built from scratch and the teams that adapt quickly can rise to the top. For creators, being among the first to explain a new system is worth its weight in gold.

Our word of warning, though, is about the business model. Free-to-play must not mean pay-to-win. If monetization affects competitive play, the game will lose its most demanding audience before it ever takes off. We'll be following every new test and beta closely to let you know whether that ace is a winning card or a bluff.
