The sequel to Mojang's dungeon-crawler spin-off is getting closer. According to Dexerto, Minecraft Dungeons 2 is practically right around the corner and, in the meantime, it's still possible to get your hands on a free cape that works both in Dungeons and in the main Minecraft game.

It might seem like a minor detail, but anyone who has spent years in Minecraft knows a cape is no ordinary cosmetic. It's one of the most coveted items in the game, a status symbol that gets shown off on servers, in streams and in every clip uploaded to social media. The fact that Mojang is using a cape as a hook for the Dungeons 2 launch says a lot about what they're after: getting the classic Minecraft community to look at the new game.

What you need to know

  • Minecraft Dungeons 2 is about to arrive, according to Dexerto.
  • There's a free cape available that you can still claim.
  • The cape works both in Dungeons and in main Minecraft.
  • It's a limited-time reward tied to the sequel's arrival, so don't sleep on it.

Why a cape matters so much in Minecraft

For anyone who doesn't live inside Minecraft, some context is in order. Capes are among the few cosmetic items that can't be crafted or bought with in-game resources: they come through events, one-off promotions or specific campaigns from Mojang and Microsoft. That turns them into a kind of social currency. When you join a server and see someone wearing a rare cape, you know they were in the right place at the right time.

That's why every time Mojang announces a new free cape, a small frenzy breaks out in the community: creators publishing guides, players sharing screenshots and, in general, a lot of activity around an item that offers no gameplay advantage whatsoever. It's a pure flex, and it works.

What changes with Dungeons 2 and who it affects

The strategy here seems fairly clear. Minecraft Dungeons was a different bet from the usual sandbox: an action dungeon-crawler with Minecraft's aesthetic, designed for co-op play and shorter sessions. The sequel needs to attract both those who enjoyed the first title and the enormous base of classic Minecraft players who may never have tried it.

Offering a cape that shows up in both games is a smart way to connect the two worlds. The survival player who wants the cape ends up finding out that Dungeons 2 exists; the Dungeons player takes home a keepsake that looks good on their main account. Everybody wins, and Mojang gets visibility for its launch without spending on traditional advertising.

That said, Dexerto doesn't detail the exact conditions or the deadline to claim it in its summary, so the sensible thing is to check the original source and Minecraft's official channels before the window closes.

Our take

From the Underworld Lordz editorial desk, we'll say it plainly: if you play Minecraft with any regularity, go get the cape. It costs nothing, it's an item that stays on your account and, over time, capes tied to specific promotions tend to become rare pieces that can no longer be obtained. There's no reason to let it slip by.

For the content creators in our community there's also an obvious opportunity. The Dungeons 2 launch is going to generate interest, and any guide, short video or stream showing how to get the cape has real reach potential. Minecraft is still one of the games with the biggest audience on the planet, and these small content windows are gold for those who know how to move fast.

Still, it's also time to be critical. Giving away cosmetics to promote a new game is a formula we know all too well, and ultimately it says little about whether Dungeons 2 will be a good game. Let's not forget that the first Dungeons divided opinion: fun in co-op, but with a progression system many considered limited compared to other titles in the genre. We'd like Mojang to put as much effort into content, endgame and long-term support as into giveaway capes. A pretty cape attracts players; a good game keeps them.
