Activision has decided that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be the final entry in the Modern Warfare series as we know it. Tyler Bahl, the company's chief marketing officer, explained this in an interview with The Game Business that was later picked up by Video Games Chronicle. As he put it, the studio wants to innovate and respond to a part of the community that is asking for something new, better or simply different. The source material for this article comes from Gamereactor Spain.
Why does it matter? Because Modern Warfare isn't just any sub-series: it's one of the pillars on which Call of Duty has built much of its recent identity. Activision openly talking about closing one cycle and opening another means the direction of the genre's most-played franchise is about to shift, and when Call of Duty shifts, so do the competitive scene, content creators and millions of players who plan their year around each release.
What You Need to Know
- Modern Warfare 4 will conclude the current Modern Warfare series, according to Tyler Bahl, Activision's chief marketing officer.
- The game is scheduled to launch on October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and PC.
- Some characters and other elements could carry over beyond this era, but in a reimagined form.
- GamingBolt reports that a new Call of Duty sub-series is planned after Modern Warfare 4.
- There's no word yet on what the next series will be, who will develop it or when it will arrive, and a Black Ops return hasn't been ruled out.
An Ending That Isn't a Clean Break
The most interesting thing about Bahl's comments isn't what he confirms, but what he leaves up in the air. Activision talks about a new chapter, but doesn't explain what the transition will look like. The most concrete hint is that certain characters and elements could survive the change, albeit reimagined. In other words: the current Modern Warfare series is ending, but that doesn't necessarily mean a break from familiar faces or from the wider Call of Duty universe.
Separately, GamingBolt suggests that a new sub-series is already on the horizon after Modern Warfare 4. However, it's worth keeping the sources apart: what Bahl said, as reported by VGC, doesn't identify which series comes next or who will be behind it. And the door to Black Ops remains open, something many veterans will appreciate.

Our Take
Here at Underworld Lordz, we're looking at this with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. Activision acknowledging that players are asking for something different is almost an admission of fatigue, and we think it's healthy to say that out loud. But "innovate" is every marketing department's favorite word, and until we see real changes in gameplay, movement, map design or how competitive play is structured, it will remain just that: a word.
For competitive players, a new era is always a double-edged sword. On one hand, it opens the door to resetting bad meta habits and rewarding whoever adapts fastest. On the other, every jump to a new sub-series tends to bring weeks of uncertainty, balance tweaks and practice routines that have to be thrown out. If the transition is as vague as it seems, we're worried the scene will have to guess where the game is heading instead of preparing with clear information.
For content creators, on the other hand, this is gold: the end of a saga, characters who might return reimagined and a mysterious new sub-series will fuel theories, breakdowns and streams for months. Our advice is simple: enjoy Modern Warfare 4 for what it is, the end of an era, and don't buy into any talk about what comes next until there's something playable on the table.
What Do You Think?
The end of Modern Warfare as a series could be the breath of fresh air Call of Duty needed, or simply a name change with the same old formula. We already have our doubts, but we want to hear yours. Do you think Call of Duty really needs a new sub-series, or would you rather see Black Ops come back? Drop by the team chat or our Discord and let us know.
