Moros Protocol Locks In PS5 and Switch 2 Release: The Roguelite FPS Arrives October 1

Vandal

A year after its PC debut, Moros Protocol finally has a console release date. As reported by Vandal, Super Rare Originals and developer Pixel Reign have confirmed that their roguelite first-person shooter will land on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 1. Until now, the game was only available on Steam and GOG, where it has been out since September 2025.

This matters because it isn't just another FPS: it blends the frantic pace of late-90s and early-2000s shooters, roguelite progression with runs that change every time thanks to procedural generation, and bosses its own creators compare to soulslikes. That cocktail is now coming to two controller-based platforms and, in the case of Switch 2, with the option to play it in handheld mode.

What you need to know

  • Date: October 1 on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Who's behind it: developed by Pixel Reign and published by Super Rare Originals.
  • Already on PC: available on Steam and GOG since September 2025.
  • Genre: retro-styled FPS with roguelite progression and Souls-inspired bosses.
  • Premise: you wake up with no memories aboard The Orpheus, an abandoned warship in deep space overrun with creatures.

What Moros Protocol brings to the table

The story begins aboard The Orpheus, a warship lost in deep space. The protagonist wakes up with no memory, surrounded by creatures, and has to fight through the corridors to figure out what happened there. Procedural generation makes every run different, so you never traverse the ship the same way twice.

Gameplay-wise, the reference point is clear: the speed and aggression of classic late-90s and early-2000s shooters, combined with the structure of a roguelite. The differentiating factor is the bosses, large-scale encounters that Pixel Reign openly compares to those of a soulslike, meaning patterns you have to read and punish rather than emptying your magazine and hoping for the best.

The visuals are deliberate too: low-poly environments and characters with pixelated textures, but backed by dynamic lighting and other modern techniques. The idea is for it to look like a game from another era without playing like one.

What changes with the console release

For PC players, nothing: the game stays right where it was. For console players, it opens the door to a type of shooter that's scarce on PS5 and that, on Nintendo Switch 2, a still-young system, adds to its niche catalog. Vandal doesn't detail technical differences between versions or pricing, so it's worth waiting for the developers to share more information before launch.

What is clear is Super Rare Originals' commitment to bringing independent games to closed platforms, and that Pixel Reign has had a full year of community feedback on PC to fine-tune its formula ahead of this second launch.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz we love shooters that demand aim and pattern recognition, and on paper Moros Protocol delivers both. The fast movement of classic FPS games is an excellent training ground for anyone who competes in shooters: it teaches you to manage space, to never stand still, and to prioritize targets. Throwing in bosses with soulslike logic on top makes it a solid patience trainer for anyone coming from more chaotic matches.

For content creators, the combination of roguelite and demanding bosses is pure gold: short runs, spectacular deaths, clips that are easy to cut, and a difficulty curve that sparks conversation. That said, the console release comes with an obvious question mark: this type of game was born for mouse and keyboard, and controller precision just isn't the same. If Pixel Reign doesn't nail the aim assist and performance, especially on Switch 2, the experience could fall well short of what PC players get.

It also doesn't help that the source mentions no sales figures, review scores, or concrete new features for these versions. A year after the PC launch, we expected more than just a date. Our recommendation: keep a close eye on it, but don't buy blind until you see how it performs on a controller.

What do you think?

Retro FPS games with a roguelite soul are trending, but not all of them hold up well on console. Can you see yourself playing Moros Protocol on Switch 2 in handheld mode, or would you rather wait for a PC sale? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord.
