Overwatch reinvents itself at BlizzCon: Doctrine arrives and Sombra switches sides

Vandal

Blizzard once again used BlizzCon as the stage to set the course for Overwatch, and this time the announcement carries real weight. As reported by Vandal, the company unveiled Doctrine, the 54th hero on the roster, a support character with a vampiric aesthetic and direct ties to Doomfist. Add to that a new escort map and, perhaps the loudest news of all, a role change for Sombra, who leaves the damage category to become a support.

Why does it matter? Because we are not talking about a skin or a numbers tweak. Changing the role of a veteran hero and adding a new support with life-manipulation mechanics shakes up the meta from top to bottom, and all of it lands with Season 5, scheduled for October 6. For anyone who plays ranked, competes in scrims or makes a living creating content about the game, the coming weeks are going to be required study.

What you need to know

  • Doctrine is hero 54: a vampire-inspired support and ally of Doomfist, with a scepter, infusions and bat-shaped mechanical drones that revolve around manipulating life force.
  • Sombra is no longer a DPS and moves to support. Blizzard has not yet detailed the full kit, but it is one of the biggest transformations she has received since she entered the game.
  • Roadhog is also getting a deep rework, although the source does not specify what it involves.
  • A new escort map is coming, whose name has not been revealed in the information available.
  • Much of this content debuts with Season 5, which kicks off on October 6.

What changes and who it hits

The Sombra move is the one that will generate the most noise. She is a hero who for years defined a very specific way of playing: hacks, flanking, pressure on backlines and that feeling of having someone invisible lurking around. Turning her into a support means Blizzard wants to keep that DNA of control and sabotage but fit it into a role where what gets measured is how well you keep your team alive. Without the detailed kit it is impossible to know whether she will be a pure utility support or have real healing, but the simple change of category already forces entire compositions to be rethought.

Doctrine, meanwhile, enters a role that has always been the most balance-sensitive in Overwatch. A support that plays with life force, with infusions and drones, sounds like a double-edged character: able to sustain and to punish at the same time. The fact that he arrives alongside Doomfist also suggests Blizzard is still building narrative around Talon, something that gives content creators plenty of material.

Roadhog and the map: what we still don't know

About Roadhog, the only thing confirmed is that there will be a deep rework. He is a tank that has historically swung between being an unbearable wall and dead weight, so any major tweak directly moves the tank meta. As for the escort map, for now we only know the game mode. We will have to wait for Blizzard to drop more details as October approaches.

Our take

From the Underworld Lordz newsroom we will say it plainly: we like that Blizzard is willing to touch things that hurt. The liability of a competitive game is a stagnant meta, and moving an iconic character to a new role is a statement of intent. That said, the timing also worries us. Announcing a change of this magnitude without the full kit leaves the competitive scene in limbo: teams that scrim and players climbing ranked cannot prepare anything until the last minute, and that has historically favored whoever has the most free hours, not whoever plays best.

For content creators, on the other hand, it is a gold mine. Theories about Sombra's kit, early Doctrine guides, Doomfist and Talon lore, reactions to Roadhog: there are weeks of material before anything even releases. Our advice to the team's streamers is not to wait until October to talk about this. The conversation is already open and the window to position yourself is now.

What we do demand, as a community that has been in the game for years, is that the Sombra change not be a half-baked patch. If they turn her into a support nobody wants to use in ranked, a hero with a real identity will have been sacrificed for an idea on paper. Blizzard has until October 6 to prove there is a plan behind it and not just a BlizzCon headline.

What do you think?

There is a lot at stake for those of us who live Overwatch competitively. Is support Sombra the logical evolution of the character or an experiment that will break the meta for months? Tell us what you think in the team chat or on our Discord: are you excited about the role change, or would you rather they had left her as she was?
