PS Plus Essential's October Games Are In: What You Need to Know

Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed the PlayStation Plus Essential games for October, as reported by Eurogamer España. As usual, this batch isn't limited to the subscription's base tier: Extra and Premium subscribers can download it too. In practice, anyone with an active PS Plus subscription gets the new titles at no extra cost.

Why does this matter to an esports community like ours? Because for a huge number of people, the monthly Essential lineup is the gateway to games they would never have bought on their own. When a title with a competitive side lands on PS Plus, it can fill servers overnight, cut matchmaking queues and trend on Twitch and YouTube for weeks. When the selection is weak, it comes and goes without anyone noticing. October is here, and it's time to take a close look.

What you need to know

  • Sony has officially announced the PlayStation Plus Essential games for October.
  • Subscribers on all three tiers of the service can download them: Essential, Extra and Premium.
  • The core information comes from Eurogamer España, which reported Sony Interactive Entertainment's announcement.
  • The news preview we're working from doesn't list the titles, so we recommend checking the PlayStation Store or the original article before taking anything for granted.

How Essential works and who it affects

Essential is the entry tier of PlayStation Plus and, for a large part of the community, the only one they pay for. Its main purpose is to unlock online multiplayer in most paid games, with the monthly games added on top. Extra and Premium include everything above and add their own catalog of titles, which means the Essential lineup is the only thing every single subscriber shares. In other words: it's the game the most people will have installed at the same time.

That detail is gold for competitive play. A player base that multiplies overnight means faster matches, a wider variety of opponents and, for titles with their own scene, the chance to run community tournaments with far more participation than usual. For content creators, it means an audience that is discovering the game right then and there, looking for guides, tips and gameplay to learn from.

A practical detail worth remembering

You need to add the monthly Essential games to your library while they're available, and access is usually tied to keeping your subscription active. If you forget to claim them in time, you miss out. Our usual advice: as soon as they go live, head to the store and add them, even if you don't plan to play them right away.

Our take

Here at Underworld Lordz, we have a love-and-skepticism relationship with the PS Plus monthly games. On one hand, there's no denying they've revived communities and given a second life to titles that deserved more attention. On the other, the selection feels like a lottery far too often: one month you get a game that takes over your friends list, and the next you get something you'll never even launch. For someone who pays for the subscription mainly to play online, that inconsistency adds up.

We'd also like to see Sony think more about competitive players when picking these lineups. Including a title with solid multiplayer every now and then doesn't just add value to the subscription: it fuels scenes, generates tournaments and keeps the conversation going for weeks. A single-player game gets finished and forgotten; a well-chosen competitive game builds a community. If Essential is going to remain the toll for playing online, the least it can do is offer monthly content that benefits the people who live online.

For creators, the advice is clear: these releases are a short and very valuable window. The first few days, when thousands of people install the game at once, are when beginner guides, first streams and clips perform best. Anyone who arrives late is competing against all the content that already exists. So whatever October's selection turns out to be, it's worth trying it early and deciding quickly whether it fits your channel.

What do you think?

The PS Plus Essential monthly games can shape what half the community plays for weeks, or go completely unnoticed. Check out October's selection, add it to your library and tell us your verdict: do you think Sony should lean more on competitive games in Essential, or would you rather it keep prioritizing single-player experiences?
