Riot Pulls the Plug on League of Legends Classic: Shutting Down in January After Just Three Months

Riot Games has decided to shut down League of Legends Classic, and it will do so in January, according to PC Gamer. The news comes just three months after the mode launched, an extremely short run for a project carrying the name of the company's biggest franchise. The official explanation is brief: most of the people who jumped into Classic have already gone back to other parts of League.
This matters beyond the mode itself. It's a clear sign of how Riot operates at this stage: launch, measure and, if the numbers don't hold up, cut without hesitation. For players who got hooked on Classic and for creators who poured hours of content into it, the message is an uncomfortable one. Not everything that carries the League name is guaranteed a long life, no matter how much buzz it generates at launch.

What You Need to Know
- Shutdown confirmed: League of Legends Classic will go offline in January.
- Short-lived: the announcement comes roughly three months after launch.
- The reason: according to Riot, most of the community has gone back to other experiences within League.
- New champions: new champions will keep coming for now, although the source doesn't clarify what will happen in the longer term.
An Experiment With an Expiration Date
Riot's reasoning says a lot, even without numbers attached. If most players have moved on to other modes, Classic's player base no longer justified the maintenance, support and content development. In a live-service game, every active mode consumes resources and also splits the community. Keeping something alive with a small player base leads to longer queues, worse matchmaking and an experience that deteriorates on its own.
Riot is no stranger to retiring things that don't catch on. Over the years, League's alternative modes have come and gone, and the company has never hesitated to shelve whatever fails to retain players. The difference here is the speed. Three months is very little time for a new offering to find its audience, especially one that leans on nostalgia or a different way of playing, which usually takes patience to build a community.
Who Does This Affect?
The hardest hit are those who found their favorite way to play in Classic. The same goes for content creators who committed to covering it: guides, series, themed streams. All of that work now has an expiration date. For competitive players focused on ranked, on the other hand, the direct impact is minimal. If anything, the community consolidates around the core game again.
The note that new champions will keep coming, at least for now, offers some reassurance. But that "for now" leaves the door open to changes, and it's best not to take anything for granted.
Our Take
Here at Underworld Lordz, we understand the business logic, but we find it hard to applaud the execution. Three months isn't a fair test for anything that aims to build a community. When a studio the size of Riot launches something with the League brand front and center, people invest time, excitement and, in many cases, money or creative effort. Shutting it down so quickly suggests the product was more of a trial balloon than a real commitment.
For creators, the lesson is harsh but useful: diversify. Betting your whole channel on a brand-new mode is risky, and this case proves it. For competitive players, the takeaway is almost the opposite. Riot cutting what fragments the community could mean more attention and resources for what people actually play seriously. Refocusing on the core isn't bad news, as long as those resources show up in balance, servers and content.
Even so, there's a trust issue Riot should take seriously. Every rushed shutdown makes the next new release land with more skepticism. If the community learns that new offerings can vanish within a quarter, players will think twice before getting invested, and that could turn the next experiment into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
