Geralt of Rivia keeps delivering good news in 2026. As reported by Vida Extra, Microsoft has just added The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to the Xbox Play Anywhere program, which means anyone who owns the game digitally on Xbox can also play it on PC, and vice versa, without paying again. The announcement comes just eight days before the launch of the free remaster that CD Projekt has scheduled for September 29 on all platforms.

It's a landmark combination for a game that already has plenty of years behind it: a no-cost remaster that reworks the combat, improves the graphics, adds quality-of-life options and opens up the mountain areas so they can be traversed, plus library compatibility between console and PC on top. For a community like ours, split between people who play on console and people who live glued to their PC, this matters more than it seems.

What you need to know

  • Xbox Play Anywhere lets a digital game bought on Xbox also be played on PC within Microsoft's ecosystem, and vice versa. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has just been added to the list.
  • CD Projekt's free remaster arrives on September 29 on all platforms, not just Xbox and PC.
  • Among the new features of that remaster, according to the source: graphical improvements, quality-of-life tweaks, reworked combat and traversable mountains.
  • The benefit applies to the digital version; the system is based on library sharing within your Microsoft account.
  • Vida Extra hints that the remaster won't be the only surprise surrounding the game.

What actually changes for players

Until now, owning The Witcher 3 on Xbox and wanting to enjoy it on PC with mods, keyboard and mouse or simply better performance meant buying it twice. With Play Anywhere, that barrier disappears: there's a single license and it moves with you. For those who switch between the couch and the desk, it's the difference between second-guessing a replay and simply installing and carrying on.

It's worth stressing that this is an ecosystem improvement, not an improvement to the game itself. What truly changes the experience is CD Projekt's remaster, which arrives on September 29 and is free for everyone. Play Anywhere only broadens where you can take advantage of it if you're inside the Microsoft environment. If your copy is on another platform, the remaster still reaches you, but the Xbox-PC compatibility doesn't.

Background: a game that refuses to age

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been the benchmark for open-world RPGs for years, and with this remaster CD Projekt has shown it's still willing to invest in it without charging for it. Microsoft jumping on board right before launch is no coincidence: the Polish studio has generated enormous anticipation with the announcement, and the community, as Vida Extra recounts, reacted with enthusiasm when they saw it. Adding Play Anywhere at this moment is a way to capitalize on that hype and to showcase the shared library as a selling point against other ecosystems.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're clear on this: this is exactly what we should demand from every platform. Buying a game once and being able to play it wherever we want, within the same ecosystem, isn't a gift, it's the reasonable thing. That it's still newsworthy at this point says more about how far behind the industry is than about Microsoft's generosity. Even so, we applaud the move, especially when it's combined with a free remaster that other companies would have sold as a new game at full price.

For content creators, the play has obvious value. Being able to record the remaster on PC with all the capture, streaming and modding tools, while keeping the save available on console for more relaxed sessions, opens up plenty of production possibilities without doubling the expense. September 29 is going to be a day full of live Geralt content, and anyone who owns the game on Xbox suddenly has one more option to do it right.

The critical side: Play Anywhere remains a perk locked to the Microsoft world and limited to digital. If you own the disc, or if your main save is on another console, this news doesn't affect you. And the fact that Microsoft chose this exact moment to announce it, eight days before a launch that CD Projekt made happen and not them, leaves us feeling it's more of a positioning campaign than a systematic policy. We'd like to see this kind of compatibility as the norm, not as a conveniently timed headline.
