Warcraft 3 Reforged cuts the cord: no more LAN or offline play in 3.0

Blizzard has released update 3.0 for Warcraft III: Reforged and, as reported by Vandal, the patch brings two changes nobody asked for: the remaster now requires a permanent internet connection even for solo play, and LAN mode has been removed from the client. Neither point is a rumor or a community interpretation: both appear in the official patch notes published by the company itself.
Why does it matter to us? Because Warcraft III is one of the historic pillars of competitive RTS, of custom maps, and of a scene that for years was built in rooms full of PCs connected by cable. For the supposedly modern version to lose two features the original game always had is a step backwards in preservation, in accessibility, and in the trust of a community that was already bruised by this remaster.

What you need to know
- Update 3.0 forces the Reforged client to stay connected at all times, even in matches against the AI or in the campaign.
- LAN mode, meaning local network matches, has been removed from the Reforged client.
- Blizzard has not explained the reasons behind either change.
- The classic client, which is still included with the purchase of Reforged, keeps both offline play and LAN matches.
- Battle.net provides specific instructions for installing that older version.
What changes and who it affects
The most visible change is the mandatory connection. Until now, Reforged let you play the campaign or matches against the computer without depending on Blizzard's servers; with 3.0, if your internet goes down, your solo match goes down with it. For anyone playing from an area with an unstable connection, from an internet café, or while traveling, this turns a single-player game into a service that only works when the company's infrastructure allows it.
The removal of LAN hits somewhere else: in-person tournaments, get-togethers with friends, and communities that organize events without relying on online matchmaking. Local network play was the guarantee that a match was played with minimal latency and no intermediaries. With 3.0, that option no longer exists within Reforged, and Blizzard has offered no technical or commercial explanation.
The classic client as a lifeline
The good news, such as it is, is that neither feature has disappeared entirely. Blizzard clarifies that the classic Warcraft III client is still included with the purchase of Reforged and retains both offline mode and LAN. Battle.net has a guide for installing it. In practice, this means that any player who wants to keep playing offline or over a local network will have to give up the remaster's graphics and improvements and go back to the old version. It is a solution, but it is also an implicit admission: the premium product offers less freedom than the one that is more than two decades old.
Our take
From the Underworld Lordz editorial team, we will say it plainly: this is a step backwards and Blizzard knows it, because otherwise they would have explained why. A remaster exists to preserve and improve a classic, not to strip away features the community has been using for years. The fact that the only way to keep offline play and LAN is to install the classic client leaves the Reforged user in an awkward position: they paid for the full version and end up using the one that was supposedly left behind.
For competitive players, the loss of LAN is the most serious blow. In-person events depend on being able to play without a latency spike or a server outage deciding the outcome. Forcing the scene to route everything through central servers means concentrating control in the company's hands, something we have already seen with other titles and that rarely ends well for those who organize grassroots tournaments with few resources and plenty of drive.
For content creators, the problem is subtler but just as real. Recording campaigns, making guides, or preparing showmatches now depends on the connection holding up for the entire session. Every disconnection is a cut in the recording, an interrupted stream, or a lost video. And the lack of an official explanation means the community fills the gap with its own theories, none of them flattering to Blizzard. If there is a compelling technical reason, communicating it would have cost very little; silence, on the other hand, comes at a high price.
What do you think?
Warcraft III is still a game many of us learned over LAN, among friends, without depending on anyone. Now the modern version forces you to stay online at all times and sends you to the classic client if you want things the way they used to be. Is that a trade-off you would accept in exchange for Reforged's graphics, or would you rather stick with the old client and forget about the remaster? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord.
