Wolverine turns down the intensity: Insomniac tones down the scent trail after criticism

Marvel's Wolverine arrived on PlayStation 5 with its claws sharpened, but also with one detail that got under the community's skin from day one: the scent trail Logan follows to find his way through each area. As reported by Vandal, Insomniac Games released hotfix 1.001.005 over the weekend, a first patch that, in addition to fixing several crash-related bugs, reduces the visibility of the scent and sound trails that had caused so much noise on social media.

This matters because it is no ordinary tweak. Insomniac had already acknowledged at launch that it planned to revisit some of the most criticized aspects of the game, and this update is the first proof that the promise was serious. For a studio with Insomniac's reputation, responding within days to such a visible complaint sets the tone for what the game's support could look like over the coming months.

What you need to know

  • Patch 1.001.005 is now available to download on PlayStation 5.
  • The main change is reduced opacity for the scent and sound trails, making the visual indicators less intense.
  • The update also fixes several bugs that were causing crashes.
  • Insomniac says it will keep looking into further improvements for Logan's enhanced senses, including new configuration options.
  • The controversy started with viral videos on social media showing how intrusive these aids were in a linear game.

From viral clips to a patch

The underlying problem was not technical but a matter of design. Marvel's Wolverine is a linear adventure, and in that kind of structure navigation aids make less sense than in an open world: the path is already laid out by the level itself. When on top of that the scent trail is drawn on screen with an intensity that competes with the art direction, it feels like playing with the level's subtitles forced on.

Added to that were other criticisms collected by Vandal, such as the lack of any real danger in certain automated sections, where the player barely does anything. The hotfix doesn't touch that area, at least for now; it focuses on visuals and stability. The interesting part is the end of the studio's statement: leaving the door open to new options for Logan's senses suggests that the definitive solution won't be a single intensity for everyone, but a menu where each player decides how much hand-holding they want from the game.

What changes for those already playing

If you already own the game, all you need to do is update. You'll see the same scent and sound trails, but with greater transparency that blends them more naturally into the scene. They don't disappear and can't be fully disabled with this patch, so anyone hoping for a completely clean experience will have to wait for the options Insomniac has promised. The crash fixes, on the other hand, benefit everyone right away.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz we applaud the quick reaction, but we won't pretend this was unforeseeable. On-screen indicator overload is a trend the industry has been dragging along for years, and by now any major studio should know the community will demand the option to turn them off. For a game of this scale to ship with such a flashy trail and no setting to adjust it is a playtesting failure, not a surprise nobody could have anticipated.

For content creators the change is especially relevant. An invasive HUD ruins screenshots, clips and streams: much of Wolverine's appeal lies in its visuals and the brutality of its combat, and nobody wants a colored streak stealing the spotlight from Logan in a thirty-second video. Lowering the opacity helps, but what we really need is a toggle. If Insomniac delivers the options it has announced, this patch will go down as a solid first step; if it stops here, it will be a half-finished patch.

We also want to be fair: the studio didn't hide. Acknowledging the criticism at launch and acting that same weekend is exactly what we ask of developers when a game ships with rough edges. The bar now is for the second round of improvements to address what this hotfix leaves untouched, starting with those tension-free automated sections that also showed up in the viral videos.

What do you think?

Assist indicators divide the community: for some they're a lifesaver, for others an insult to the player's intelligence. With this patch Insomniac has chosen the middle ground, but it still has to decide how much freedom to give the user. Would you rather Logan's scent trail could be turned off completely, or is making it less visible enough for you? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord.
