Wolverine now lets you turn off the guide trail: Insomniac gives in to criticism

Insomniac Games has updated Marvel's Wolverine once again. As reported by Vandal, patch 1.001.006, released in the past few days, adds the option to fully disable the aids that guide Logan toward certain objectives. This is the scent or sound trail that many players found far too intrusive. It is the studio's second response to this complaint since launch, and this time it goes well beyond a simple visual tweak.
Why does it matter? Because the change touches on something deeper than an options menu: how much a video game should hold your hand. In a linear title like this one, having the environment itself point the way to every secret takes the meaning out of exploring. Insomniac listening and handing control to the player is good news for anyone looking for a cleaner experience. It is also good news for content creators who want to show the game without on-screen clutter.

What you need to know
- Patch 1.001.006 for Marvel's Wolverine lets you toggle the aids on and off for locating collectibles.
- The settings are individual: you choose which of Logan's heightened senses you want to keep and which you don't.
- They cover all three types of collectibles in the game: whiskey bottles, supply crates and Nightmare Doors.
- An earlier hotfix had already made the trail less visible, but it didn't let you remove it.
- Insomniac had promised to "refine" the experience following community criticism.
From hotfix to full option: how the change has evolved
The story has two chapters. First came a post-launch patch that, as a quick fix, toned down the trail's visibility. It only solved half the problem, because the indicator was still there, just more subtle. Now, with version 1.001.006, players can remove it outright for the affected objectives.
It's worth clarifying where the criticism came from. It wasn't aimed at the existence of aids as such, which are common in many modern releases. It targeted two specific issues. The first was their presence in a game with a linear structure, where getting lost is hardly a risk. The second was how much they stood out against the environment, to the point of breaking the atmosphere.
What you can configure
The update splits Logan's heightened senses by collectible type. Here's the breakdown:
| Collectible | Can the aid be disabled? | Control type |
|---|---|---|
| Whiskey bottles | Yes | Individual |
| Supply crates | Yes | Individual |
| Nightmare Doors | Yes | Individual |
This lets you, for example, keep the aid for a type of item you're struggling with and switch it off for the rest. It's real flexibility, not an all-or-nothing switch.

Our take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're clear on this: it should have been there from day one. Assist options matter, and nobody disputes that some players need or prefer them. The problem arises when you can't turn them off. Forcing a flashy trail on players in a linear game signals a lack of trust in them, as if the studio feared someone might get lost in a corridor.
That said, credit where it's due for the response. Insomniac didn't stop at a cosmetic hotfix. It listened, promised to make adjustments and delivered a granular system that respects different playstyles. For completionists chasing 100% or anyone who enjoys tracking down every secret on their own, being able to choose which aids to keep changes the experience. For content creators it's a gift: recording or streaming with a clean screen, without guides giving away where every bottle is, makes discoveries feel genuine in front of an audience.
The lesson for the industry is an old one, yet it still hasn't been learned: give options, not impositions. Every time a major studio has to fix something as basic as a menu toggle after launch, it loses a first impression it can never get back.
What do you think?
Some players appreciate the game showing them the way, while others prefer to discover everything on their own. Now Wolverine lets you choose. Drop by the team chat or our Discord and tell us: are you going to switch off Logan's senses, or would you rather keep the aids on?
