007 First Light gets a free DLC on October 1, and IO Interactive has only shown a car

IO Interactive keeps expanding 007 First Light after launch. The Danish studio has announced a new, completely free DLC arriving on October 1, which is tomorrow. For now, it hasn't said what's included. As reported by Vandal, the announcement went up on the game's official account alongside nothing more than a very short video: a car speeding down a road lined with dense greenery. There are no other clues.

This matters for several reasons. First, because it's free, and that's no longer the norm for big games. Second, because it confirms that IO Interactive wants to keep its Bond game alive with regular content, just as it did for years with Hitman. And third, because the mystery has sparked debate in the community: if the car is the main clue, driving could play a big role in whatever arrives tomorrow.

What could the DLC bring?

Three things are confirmed: the date, the fact that it will be free, and the existence of a teaser featuring a car. Everything else is just reading into the video. Even so, in a franchise like James Bond, a car doesn't get shown by accident. Chases and vehicles have been part of the character's identity for decades, and it wouldn't be surprising if IO Interactive wanted to give them more weight in this expansion.

The Bawma clue

The strongest theory points to Bawma Will Return, one of the pieces of content the studio had already announced in 007 First Light's first-year roadmap. As the name suggests, that mission would bring back Bawma, a character players already know. It would fit the schedule: if the studio had committed to this mission for the first year, releasing it as a free DLC would make sense. But, once again, IO Interactive has not confirmed it, and the teaser doesn't show any characters, just the car and the road.

The roadmap model

What is clear is that First Light isn't meant to be a finished, self-contained game. An annual roadmap and the arrival of free content show that the studio is betting on a long life cycle, with regular reasons to come back and play. It's the same formula it used with Hitman: new missions, challenges and events that keep the community active long after launch.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we think this is good news. A game of this size getting free content, rather than a paid season pass hidden behind the word "expansion", is something we should appreciate. On top of that, IO Interactive has a track record: it knows how to design replayable missions with multiple routes and objectives, and that's hugely valuable for players who love squeezing every last variation out of a level.

That said, we also have a criticism. Announcing a DLC one day before release without saying what's in it works as marketing, but it leaves players with nothing to plan around. Content creators feel this the most: they can't prepare guides, thumbnails or streams in advance if they don't know whether they're getting a mission, a driving mode or just a simple event. A bit more transparency, even a basic list, would go a long way for the community that keeps the game alive on YouTube, Twitch and TikTok.

For competitive players, the key question is a different one: will there be timed challenges or leaderboard events? If the DLC includes driving and comes with time leaderboards, a very interesting speedrun scene could emerge. If it's just a story mission, people will play it once and move on.
