Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 now has multiplayer thanks to a mod, and its creator loves it

Some games seem designed to be experienced alone, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was, until now, one of the clearest examples. Warhorse Studios' medieval action RPG, one of last year's biggest releases, was built around a dense story, carefully crafted characters and an almost obsessive commitment to realism. The modding community, however, had other plans: as reported by Vida Extra, there is now a mod that adds online multiplayer to the game, available as an open beta for the PC version on Steam.

This news matters for two reasons. First, what looked like mere interest a few months ago has turned into something playable. Second, this isn't a project the studio views with suspicion: according to the source's headline, the RPG's creator himself is thrilled with the idea. When the person behind the game applauds the modders, the conversation takes on a different tone.

What you need to know

  • A community mod adds online multiplayer to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
  • For now, it's only available as an open beta for PC via Steam.
  • The mod removes the story entirely, along with the quests and all of the key story characters.
  • In exchange, players can create their own characters and go on shared adventures.
  • The game's creator has publicly expressed his enthusiasm for the project.

From the story's Henry to your own knight

The most striking thing about this mod isn't just that it works, but the design decision behind it. Instead of trying to squeeze multiple players into a narrative built for one, its authors chose to strip the world of its script: out goes the main story, out go the quests and out go the major characters. What remains is the medieval Bohemia that Warhorse recreated in such detail, turned into an open stage where each player can build their own identity.

It's a pragmatic solution. Syncing cutscenes, dialogue and choices across several people is a technical nightmare, and any half-hearted attempt would have broken the experience. By removing the story, the mod ends up closer to a roleplaying sandbox than a co-op campaign. That said, it also means giving up a huge part of what made the game special.

A game that keeps growing

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 hasn't stood still since launch. It has received several official updates and expansions, and the modding scene has been exploring alternative ways to enjoy it. This multiplayer mod is probably the most ambitious experiment to date, and it's arriving as a beta, so it's reasonable to expect bugs, tweaks and major changes before it's polished.

Our take

At Underworld Lordz, we're very excited about this mod, but we're also keeping our feet on the ground. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's combat system, built on attack directions, blocks and stamina management, has huge competitive potential. If the mod allows player duels with even a minimum of stability, we could be looking at a small niche of technical medieval PvP that many of us have been asking for for a long time. Dueling tournaments, skill challenges, community events: the possibilities are there.

For content creators, the appeal is even more obvious. A realistic, unscripted open world shared with friends is a machine for generating unpredictable moments: ambushes, alliances, betrayals and pure chaos. That works great on stream. That said, we need to stay critical: a mod beta is not a finished product, and it would be wise not to overhype it on stream or promise viewers something that could break with the game's next patch.

We also think the game creator's gesture is significant. A developer celebrating the community's work instead of putting obstacles in its way is a healthy sign for the industry. Hopefully it translates into some kind of real support, although nothing has been announced on that front yet, so it's best not to get ahead of ourselves.
