Control Resonant gets a photo mode on PC thanks to a mod; consoles must wait until November

Control Resonant has plenty going for it: a delightfully strange world, a story that invites hours of theorizing and, above all, art direction that can leave you speechless. Yet it lacks something its own aesthetic demands in every scene: a photo mode. Remedy Entertainment plans to add one in a November update, but, as GameSpot reports, the PC community has decided not to sit around and wait.

A Nexus Mods user known as Kkyleeb21 has released a tool that unlocks the free camera built into the game's engine and freezes time so you can frame your shots at your leisure. Its design is inspired by Alan Wake 2's photo mode. It may sound like minor news, but it isn't: it reopens the debate about how much modding matters on PC and about the disadvantage console players face, once again left watching from the sidelines.

What you need to know

  • Control Resonant has no official photo mode. Remedy will add one in an update planned for November.
  • PC already has an unofficial alternative: a mod created by Kkyleeb21 and available on Nexus Mods.
  • The mod uses the engine's own free camera and freezes the action, with an approach similar to Alan Wake 2's.
  • It offers presets, exposure and depth of field controls, image cropping and six filters.
  • On Xbox Series X|S and PS5 there is no alternative: players will have to wait for the official patch.

What the mod offers and who can use it

What makes Kkyleeb21's work interesting is that it doesn't just unlock the camera and wish you luck. It works as a full photo mode. When you activate it, the game switches to its internal free camera and stops time, so you can roam the scene and find the perfect angle without an enemy interrupting you. From there, you have everything a virtual photographer could want: presets to switch styles quickly, exposure and depth of field controls, an option to crop the image and six filters to give it whatever tone you're after.

The catch is the usual one: it's only available to people playing on PC. Here's how things stand on each platform:

A game made to be photographed

If you've spent any time with Control Resonant, you know why this feature is so sorely missed. The Hiss floating in midair, the red-tinged atmosphere as you venture into dangerous areas, a New York twisted by the Altered World Event: every frame seems designed for a screenshot. GameSpot sums it up with an idea we share: the game is begging to be photographed.

It's no coincidence that the mod takes Alan Wake 2 as its reference, either. Remedy already knows how to make photo modes, which makes it even more striking that this installment didn't ship with one. The mod isn't inventing a new tool. It's getting ahead of something the studio already has on the horizon.

Our take

Here in the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're clear on this: a game with art direction like this shouldn't launch without a photo mode. For a purely competitive player, it might be an unimportant extra. For anyone who creates content, though, it's a work tool. Thumbnails, cover images, social media posts, stream backgrounds: all of that gets made in the first few weeks, when the conversation around a game is at its liveliest. With the official feature arriving in November, many creators are going to miss exactly that window.

That said, Kkyleeb21's work deserves applause. It's another example of how the PC community fills the gaps studios leave behind, and it does so with a tool that, judging by the source's description, is anything but slapdash. Still, it's worth remembering that an unofficial mod depends on its creator and may be affected by future patches. If you're going to build your content workflow around it, have a backup plan.

What bothers us most is the gap between platforms. Creators on Xbox Series X|S or PS5 are left out with no options at all, while PC players are already posting screenshots. It's certainly not the modder's fault, but it is a wake-up call for Remedy: some features are now part of the basic package, and photo mode is one of them.

What do you think?

Some people think photo mode is a luxury, while others consider it essential in a game like this. We've made our position clear, but we want to hear yours in the team chat or on our Discord. Are you going to install the mod on PC, or would you rather wait for the official version in November?
