The tunnels of the Moscow Metro are lighting up again, though not too much, since the darkness is half the appeal. As reported by Gamereactor España, Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux are getting a free current-gen update. It arrives first on PC on October 22, followed a week later, on October 29, by PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. If you already own these games on a supported platform, the upgrade won't cost you a thing.
Why does this matter? Because we've grown used to every facelift being sold as a full-price remaster. Here, 4A Games does the opposite: it updates two classics of the story-driven shooter without asking for more money, and it makes clear it has no intention of reinventing them. It's a way of looking after the back catalog and the community that keeps it alive, something that's in short supply in today's industry.

What You Need to Know
- Dates: PC on October 22; PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on October 29.
- Price: free for anyone who already owns the games on supported platforms.
- Philosophy: it's neither a remake nor a full remaster; the goal is to preserve the look and feel of the Redux versions.
- Shared improvements: 4K textures, improved animations, higher-fidelity audio, more detailed environments, bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements requested by the community.
- Console performance: 4K at 60 fps or upscaled 4K at 120 fps on compatible displays; PS5 Pro will take advantage of PSSR.
What Changes on Each Platform
The update shares a common foundation, but each version gets its own treatment. On PC, the patch adds support for DLSS, spatial audio and platform-specific fixes. That's good news for anyone who wants to push their graphics card without sacrificing smoothness, and spatial audio is a perfect fit for a game where hearing a mutant before you see it makes all the difference.
On consoles, the big leap is native current-gen support. You'll be able to choose between 4K at 60 fps or upscaled 4K at 120 fps if your display supports it, along with improved lighting, shadows and particle effects. As for the PS5 Pro, the source states that it will take advantage of PSSR upscaling technology.
| Platform | Date | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| PC | October 22 | DLSS, spatial audio, platform-specific fixes |
| PS5 / Xbox Series X/S | October 29 | 4K at 60 fps or upscaled 4K at 120 fps, improved lighting, shadows and particles |
| PS5 Pro | October 29 | PSSR support |
Preserving Instead of Reinventing
The most interesting detail is 4A Games' stated intention: to keep the original experience and tone intact. The Redux versions were already a reworking of the base games back in the day, so changing too much risked breaking their identity. Focusing on textures, animations, audio and technical polish, rather than rebuilding levels or mechanics, looks like a decision made with those who fondly remember those tunnels in mind.

Our Take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're clear on this: this is how you look after a back catalog. A free update with concrete dates and honest goals is worth more than plenty of remasters puffed up by marketing. The inclusion of quality-of-life improvements requested by the community shows that someone actually listened to the forums, and that deserves credit.
For competitive players, Metro isn't a tournament title, but the 120 fps mode is a welcome touch: anyone used to the responsiveness of a fast-paced shooter will feel the difference when aiming during the most intense firefights. For content creators, it's a win across the board: two games with powerful storytelling, now with better visuals and sound, make ideal material for streams, retrospectives or speedruns. And the fact that they're arriving in October, right in the middle of horror season, hardly seems like a coincidence.
That said, there's one thing we're critical of: the one-week gap between PC and consoles. It's not a huge deal, but once again it leaves part of the community waiting while others are already playing. We'll also need to check at launch whether the performance promises truly hold up, because announcements always look better on paper than on screen.
What Do You Think?
We love it when a studio decides to improve something you already own without making you pay again, but every player has their own priorities. Do you prefer respectful updates like this one, or would you have liked a full Metro remake? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord.
