Deadlock Awakens: City Never Sleeps Brings Six Heroes and a Rebuilt City

Valve keeps making moves with Deadlock, its third-person action and MOBA hybrid that is still invite-only. The studio has released City Never Sleeps, an update that, as reported by Vandal, ranks among the biggest the game has received so far: six new heroes, a heavily reworked map, and a solid batch of interface, accessibility and gameplay changes.
Why does it matter? Because Deadlock has long been the project everyone talks about but few can actually play, and every major patch is a clue about where Valve wants to take it. A map redesign isn't just a facelift: in a game built on a MOBA structure, the terrain is everything. It changes routes, changes rotations and forces teams to rethink strategies many of them had already refined.

What You Need to Know
- City Never Sleeps is one of Deadlock's biggest updates to date.
- Six new heroes are coming: Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet.
- They won't all be available on day one: Valve is bringing back the voting system it has used in the past.
- The map has been redesigned with themed areas and four districts, each with its own identity.
- The game remains invite-only.
A City with Its Own Personality
The biggest visual and structural change is the setting itself. Valve wants every corner of the city to be recognizable at a glance, something that had been missing until now. According to Vandal, the map now features a brighter downtown, a haunted university and a rather unsettling stock exchange, along with four districts with distinct character. It's not just decoration: buildings and many of the neutral enemies have also been adapted to each area's theme.
| Area | Atmosphere |
|---|---|
| Downtown | Brighter than before |
| University | Haunted |
| Stock exchange | Unsettling |
| Districts | Four, each with its own identity |
For serious players, the takeaway is clear: map readability improves. Knowing where you are at a glance, calling out positions with clear landmarks over voice, and finding your bearings in the middle of chaos is gold in any competitive match. 'I'm at the university' says far more than any improvised coordinate.
Six Heroes, but a Few at a Time
The other headline feature is the roster. Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet are joining the cast, although their arrival will be staggered. Valve is once again turning to the voting system it has tried before, an approach that involves the community in the process of adding new characters. The source doesn't yet detail abilities or specific release dates for each one, so we'll have to wait to see how they fit into the meta.
On top of all this come interface and accessibility improvements, an area that often goes unnoticed in the headlines but makes a real difference in any player's day-to-day experience.
Our Take
Here at Underworld Lordz, we like what we see, with some caveats. Rebuilding the map is a bold decision and, visually, a necessary one: Deadlock had an identity problem with its setting, and this update tackles exactly that. That said, for competitive players it's also a forced reset. Everything learned about rotations, ambushes and neutral control is up for grabs again, and whoever puts in the most lab hours over the coming weeks will gain the edge. If you play as a team, now is the time to sit down and review matches again.
We see the voting system as a double-edged sword. On one hand, community involvement builds hype, conversation and a steady stream of new content that keeps the game alive. On the other, releasing heroes a few at a time in a game that's still closed stretches out the feeling of a never-ending test project. We've been wondering for a while when Valve will make the jump to open access, and this patch, despite its size, doesn't answer that question.
For content creators, on the other hand, it's a gift: six characters to discover, a new map to break down, and a vote that opens the door to polls, predictions and live debates. If you make guides or analysis, the coming weeks are the perfect window to establish yourself before the meta settles.
What Do You Think?
A rebuilt map, six heroes on the way and the community voting on their arrival: Valve is betting big on Deadlock, even if it's still keeping it behind invites. Do you think City Never Sleeps is the push the game needed, or would you rather Valve finally open the doors to everyone? Let us know in the team chat or drop by our Discord to discuss it.
