Xbox Debuts Mythic Achievements: Its Own Platinum Arrives, and It Looks to the Past Too

Microsoft has finally given a name and a set of rules to one of the Xbox community's most frequent requests: Mythic Achievements. As reported by Vandal, this is a reward that unlocks when you earn all of a game's original achievements. Put simply, it's the green brand's answer to PlayStation's Platinum trophy. The feature has already started testing with members of the Xbox Insider program.

The news matters for two reasons. First, 100% completing a game on Xbox will finally come with its own badge of honor, something more than just watching your Gamerscore go up. Second, and perhaps most interesting, the system is retroactive: games you completed years ago, including Xbox 360 titles, count too. Your record as an achievement hunter just gained value without you having to lift a finger.

What You Need to Know

  • A Mythic Achievement is earned by unlocking all of a game's original achievements.
  • You don't need to complete achievements added later through DLC, expansions or updates.
  • It's retroactive: Xbox is already recognizing eligible games completed in the past as Mythic, even on Xbox 360.
  • The feature is currently being tested with Xbox Insider members.
  • Days before the announcement, its icon and sound had already been discovered in test builds of the system.

How It Works and Who It Affects

The approach is simple and, at its core, sensible. Microsoft uses the achievement list a game launched with as the benchmark and leaves out everything that came afterward. In other words, if a title gets an expansion with new challenges, your Mythic isn't lost or left in limbo: what counts is having squeezed everything out of the base game.

ContentDoes it count toward the Mythic Achievement?
The game's original achievementsYes, they're required
DLC and expansion achievementsNot required
Achievements added in updatesNot required
Games completed in the pastYes, if eligible
Xbox 360 titlesIncluded in the retroactive rollout

This decision has a big impact on veteran profiles. Anyone who has been racking up points since the Xbox 360 days will see their library fill up with Mythics all at once, while newer players will have a clear goal for every game they start. And for those who buy downloadable content a little at a time, excluding DLC avoids the feeling of having to pay more just to get their effort recognized.

From Leak to Official Announcement

As Vandal had already reported, the reward first showed up in test builds, icon and sound included, before Xbox explained how it works. Its run through Xbox Insider suggests Microsoft wants to polish the details before opening it up to everyone, although the information available so far doesn't include a specific date for the general release.

Our Take

Here at Underworld Lordz, we're clear on this one: it's late, but it's done right. For years, Gamerscore has been a number that keeps climbing without much meaning, and the lack of clear recognition for completing a game was one of the ecosystem's most obvious shortcomings compared to PlayStation. Retroactivity is the big win: punishing longtime players by forcing them to replay games would have been a textbook mistake.

That said, there are a few things to keep an eye on. The word eligible leaves room for certain games to be left out, and Microsoft should be transparent about the criteria it's applying. We're also worried about devaluation: if a game with giveaway achievements awards the same Mythic as a demanding title, the badge loses some of its weight. We're not asking for an impossible ranking system, but some context would help, such as showing the percentage of players who have earned it.

For content creators, this is a gold mine. Mythic-hunting streams, challenges between team members or series about completing Xbox 360 classics now have a visible goal that's easy to communicate. And for competitive players, a profile full of Mythics in tough games can become a far more telling calling card than an inflated Gamerscore.

What Do You Think?
