The first serious numbers of the football season are in, and they leave no room for doubt: EA Sports FC 27 has launched in Spain with tremendous momentum. According to weekly data from the Spanish Video Game Association (AEVI), reported by Vandal, Electronic Arts' new football sim took the top spot in both physical sales and combined physical and digital sales during the week of September 21 to 27, which coincided with its release.
The other interesting takeaway from the report comes from Silent Hill: Townfall, which landed right behind it with a more modest volume but one striking detail: the vast majority of its copies were sold as boxed editions. In the age of digital storefronts, a horror game relying this heavily on physical sales says a lot about its audience and about how collecting is still thriving in the Spanish market.
What you need to know
- EA Sports FC 27 sold 146,363 units combined in Spain during its launch week, of which 64,325 were physical copies.
- The data covers the week of September 21 to 27 and was published by AEVI.
- Silent Hill: Townfall took second place with 12,334 units in total.
- Around 82% of Townfall's copies (10,204 units) were sold physically.
- Football once again proves to be the biggest sales driver in the Spanish market at the end of September.
The numbers, head to head
Comparing the two launches on raw numbers alone would be unfair: one is the country's best-selling sports franchise year after year, and the other is a horror title with a much more specific audience. Even so, putting the figures side by side helps illustrate two very different ways of buying games.
| Game | Total units (physical + digital) | Physical units | Physical share |
|---|---|---|---|
| EA Sports FC 27 | 146,363 | 64,325 | Just under half |
| Silent Hill: Townfall | 12,334 | 10,204 | Around 82% |
Doing the math, FC 27 sold more digital copies than physical ones, which makes sense for a game that many people buy on launch day, often in editions with early access and with an eye on jumping into Ultimate Team as soon as possible. Townfall goes in exactly the opposite direction: its community prefers to have the disc or cartridge on the shelf.
Why the format matters
Townfall's numbers matter to retailers, distributors and publishers. They show there is still a strong niche that values physical products, especially in long-running series with loyal fans like Silent Hill. For FC 27, on the other hand, the split confirms that football fans have largely moved to digital, which is also where the microtransaction business that carries so much weight in the franchise is concentrated.

Our take
Here at Underworld Lordz, we are not surprised that FC 27 is dominating: it is the game that drives tournaments, Pro Clubs leagues and a huge share of the content on Twitch and YouTube every fall. But we do want to highlight one thing: sales this high on launch weekend come down more to habit and the momentum of Ultimate Team than to anything the game has actually proven. The real competitive question is not how many copies it sells, but whether the gameplay, the netcode and the meta balance hold up through the first patches. If the game arrives broken for the competitive scene, not even 146,000 copies will save competitive players from a frustrating season.
For content creators, this launch is a clear signal: the audience is there, and the first few weeks are the time to make the most of it, when everyone is looking for guides, budget squads and custom tactics. That said, it is best not to fall into the trap of relying only on pack openings; the content that lasts is the content that teaches people to play better.
As for Silent Hill: Townfall, we think it is great news for a different reason. A horror game breaking into the top of the sales charts, and doing it on the strength of physical copies, shows there is life beyond the usual big releases. It is not a competitive title, but it is a reminder that the Spanish-speaking gaming community is far more diverse than football-dominated charts would suggest.
