Forza Horizon 6 and the Xbox Reset: The PS5 Port Hangs in the Balance

Xbox is in the middle of a major restructuring, and one of its crown jewels is paying the price. According to Vida Extra, what the company has dubbed the Xbox Reset (a label championed by figures such as Asha Sharma and Matthew Ball) actually conceals a massive cost-cutting drive: 3,200 layoffs over the current fiscal year, alongside a change of course in its exclusives policy and brand image. The shake-up has thrown many across the ecosystem off balance, but few as much as Playground Games and its Forza Horizon 6.
Why does it matter? Because this is neither a minor project nor a struggling bet. According to the source, Forza Horizon was the only Xbox franchise in genuinely enviable shape: regular releases and very strong sales, with a significant share of them on PS5. Now, the shift toward exclusivity has frozen the version for Sony's console, which in theory should already be available. When a brand pulls its best driver off the track in the middle of the straight, it's worth asking what's going on in the pits.

What You Need to Know
- Xbox expects 3,200 layoffs during the current fiscal year as part of its so-called Reset.
- The company has changed its strategy on exclusives, with Gears of War: E-Day becoming an exclusive as the most visible sign.
- The PS5 port of Forza Horizon 6, which should already have arrived, has been put on hold.
- Playground Games has publicly acknowledged that it hasn't communicated with its community as much as it should have.
- Rumors are circulating about a possible release date, still without official confirmation.
From Multiplatform to the Trenches
In recent years, Xbox had gotten us used to a very specific message: its games could live on multiple platforms, and that wasn't a defeat but a way to reach more people. Forza Horizon was the perfect example of that philosophy in action: a series with a steady release cadence, a strong reception and an audience that was also growing outside the green ecosystem.
The summer showcase marked the turning point. Making Gears of War: E-Day an exclusive was the clearest signal that the wind had changed, and the domino effect hit Forza Horizon 6 head-on. The problem is that, unlike a game that has yet to launch, here there were expectations in place and a PS5 community that was already counting on the game. Leaving it in limbo isn't a neutral move: it comes at a cost in trust.
Who It Affects and How
The first to be affected are, obviously, the PS5 players who were waiting for their version. But the impact goes further. Playground Games is now working under enormous uncertainty, inside a company that is cutting staff on a large scale, and the studio itself has admitted that its communication has been lacking. That admission speaks volumes: if not even the team can say clearly what comes next, it's because the decisions are being made higher up.
There are consequences for the competitive and content scenes too. A player base split by platform shrinks the size of communities, organized events and the potential audience for anyone streaming or making videos about the game.
Our Take
Here at Underworld Lordz, we're pretty clear on this: punishing your healthiest franchise to reinforce a brand message is a risky play, if not an outright contradictory one. If Forza Horizon worked precisely because it reached everyone, halting its expansion in the name of exclusivity looks more like an image move than a decision made with players in mind. And calling thousands of layoffs a Reset doesn't help make the narrative believable.
For competitive players, fragmentation is bad news. Racing games thrive on active communities, on the leagues, clubs and friendly tournaments that spring up organically. The more platforms, the more rivals and the more life a title has. Something similar happens for content creators: uncertainty over whether the game will reach PS5 makes it harder to plan series, collaborations or launch coverage.
That said, we appreciate that Playground has stepped up and owned its silence. It's not much, but it's something. Now it's up to Xbox to explain transparently what it wants to be, because the mixed messages of recent months only breed distrust. And in a community like gaming, distrust comes at a high price.
What Do You Think?
The port may end up arriving, or Xbox may stand firm on exclusivity. What's clear is that this decision sets the tone for the brand's new era.
