Gears of War: E-Day isn't available to everyone yet, but it already has something to celebrate. According to Vandal, The Coalition's latest entry reached a peak of 20,374 concurrent players on Steam during the first hours of its early access. No other game in the series had ever climbed that high on Valve's store.
Why does it matter? Because Gears has never been a particularly strong franchise on Steam. Its natural home has always been the Xbox ecosystem, and on PC a large share of its audience plays through Microsoft's app. The fact that its Steam debut doubles the series' best-ever figure, and does so before the full launch, suggests that interest in E-Day reaches beyond the usual core fanbase. For a series that has spent years trying to regain relevance, it's a very strong start.

What you need to know
- New series record on Steam: 20,374 concurrent players during early access.
- Gears 5 left behind: its all-time peak on the platform is 10,196 players, so E-Day nearly doubles it.
- Gears of War: Reloaded never surpassed 5,000 concurrent players on Steam.
- The figure is partial: it comes from SteamDB and doesn't include people playing on Xbox Series X|S or on PC through the Xbox app.
- Game Pass isn't counted: it also leaves out the players who will jump in through the subscription service once the full launch arrives.
A record with fine print
This number deserves a careful look. SteamDB only measures what happens on Steam, so these 20,374 players are just one part of the picture. Consoles, the PC version on the Xbox app and, above all, the flood of players that usually arrives through Game Pass on full launch day are all missing. In other words, E-Day's actual player count right now is higher than these numbers show.
Even so, comparing Steam with Steam is fair, because all three games compete under the same conditions. And there, the gap is clear:
| Game | Peak concurrent players on Steam | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Gears of War: E-Day | 20,374 | Early access, before full launch |
| Gears 5 | 10,196 | All-time peak |
| Gears of War: Reloaded | Under 5,000 | All-time peak |
Who it affects
Mainly PC players who choose Steam. A larger user base on Valve's platform should, in theory, mean faster matchmaking, more reviews, more community guides and more visibility on the most-played charts. It's also good news for content creators: a game sitting near the top of Steam's charts draws in curious players, and those players look for streams and videos to decide whether to buy it.

Our take
Here at Underworld Lordz we're celebrating, but keeping our feet on the ground. An early access peak measures excitement, not retention. The people who jump in during the first hours tend to be the most dedicated fans, and the key question isn't how many showed up on day one, but how many are still around a month later. We've seen too many shooters start strong and fizzle out as soon as the launch content runs thin or the multiplayer fails to hook players.
From a competitive standpoint, what interests us most is what this figure suggests about the multiplayer. Gears has always had a loyal but small scene, heavily concentrated on console. If E-Day manages to build a solid PC community, with well-implemented crossplay and servers that hold up, it could open the door to more accessible tournaments for players in the Americas and Europe who have so far watched the series from the outside. That said, success on Steam means nothing if weapon balance, netcode or the ranked system fall short. That's where competitive players are won or lost.
For creators, the message is clear: now is the time to get on board. The first days of a high-profile launch are golden for building an audience, and E-Day looks set to be one of the most talked-about games of the coming weeks. Our advice is not to stop at the hype: guides, map breakdowns and quality content last far longer than a viral clip.
What do you think?
The launch numbers are good, but the series' future depends on how well the multiplayer holds up over time. Do you think Gears of War: E-Day has what it takes to build a serious competitive scene on PC, or will this be a short-lived spike? Let us know in the team chat or on our Discord.
