The wait ended early for part of the community: Gears of War: E-Day is playable on Xbox Series X|S and PC starting today, October 1, five days ahead of its official release on October 6. According to Vandal, early access opened at 5:00 PM CEST (mainland Spain time) and is reserved for Premium Edition owners or players who buy its upgrade separately.
Why does it matter? Because this isn't just any Gears game. The Coalition is going back to where the whole saga began, Emergence Day, with a still-young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. It marks the return of one of the most iconic franchises in the Xbox ecosystem and, at the same time, yet another example of a practice that has become the industry norm: paying more to play before everyone else.

What you need to know
- Early access began on October 1 at 5:00 PM CEST (mainland Spain time) on Xbox Series X|S and PC.
- The official launch is set for October 6, so the head start is five days.
- The Premium Edition, which includes this early access, costs €99.99.
- If you already own the Standard Edition (€69.99), you can jump in today by buying the Premium Edition Upgrade for €30.
- Vandal has already finished the campaign and published its review of this return to the series' origins.
Prices and how to play starting today
The formula is simple: either buy the most expensive edition outright, or start with the Standard Edition and pay the difference. Here are the options, based on the figures reported by Vandal:
| Option | Price | Early access |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | €69.99 | No |
| Premium Edition Upgrade | €30 | Yes (on top of the Standard Edition) |
| Premium Edition | €99.99 | Yes |
Doing the math, the Standard Edition plus the upgrade adds up to exactly the same as buying the Premium Edition outright. That's a nice touch: if you started with the base version, you aren't penalized for upgrading later. But the bottom line is clear: playing on October 1 instead of October 6 costs €30, and everyone will have to decide whether those five days are worth the money.
A return to where it all began
Beyond the business side, E-Day carries enormous symbolic weight. Telling the story of Emergence Day, the moment everything falls apart in the Gears universe, is a bet on nostalgia and, at the same time, an opportunity for new players to jump into the saga without years of backstory to catch up on. Seeing Marcus and Dom before they became the hardened veterans we know is, on paper, a very strong hook.
Vandal has already finished the story and devoted a review to the campaign, so if you want a detailed assessment before deciding whether to pay up, that's a good place to start. The launch also comes with a trailer that the source itself describes as spectacular, a sign that Xbox wants to turn this release into an event.

Our take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're clear on this: paid early access is no longer the exception, it's the model. And while we understand there's an audience willing to pay to get ahead, we're not convinced that the difference between playing sooner or later should come down to who has the bigger budget. Five days may not sound like much, but for a launch of this size it's an eternity: spoilers, guides, first impressions and social media buzz all take shape in exactly that window.
For content creators, those five days are gold. Whoever publishes first wins the searches, views and rankings, so for many streamers and YouTubers the Premium Edition stops being optional and becomes a work tool. That creates an uncomfortable barrier to entry for smaller channels, which are at a disadvantage from minute one. For competitive players, the value depends on which modes are available during early access; if your goal is to dominate online, it's worth checking exactly what's included before you pay, because the source focuses on the campaign.
That said, credit where it's due: the upgrade is fairly priced and doesn't punish those who bought the Standard Edition. Our advice is simple: if you're a creator or a die-hard fan of the series, upgrading may make sense; if you just want to enjoy the story, waiting until October 6 won't cost you anything, except having to dodge spoilers for a few days.
What do you think?
Marcus and Dom's return is already here for some, and everyone else will have it in just a few days. We want to know how you see it from your side of the controller or keyboard.
