The question half the community has been asking for months has finally reached the person in charge at Nintendo of America. Devon Pritchard, president of the Big N's US division, was asked in an interview with Variety whether GTA 6 could land on Nintendo Switch 2. Her answer was as diplomatic as it was predictable: that decision belongs to Take-Two and Rockstar, and Nintendo has nothing to announce at this time. That's according to Vandal, the outlet we sourced the core information for this piece from.

Why does something that seemingly says nothing matter? Because the most anticipated game of the generation is still only announced for PS5 and Xbox Series, and because Switch 2 has already shown it can handle big-budget multiplatform releases. The fact that Nintendo isn't ruling it out, but instead deferring to the publisher, keeps alive a conversation that affects millions of players who use the hybrid as their main console or as their go-to machine for gaming on the move.

What you need to know

  • GTA 6 is only confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series; no version has been announced for any Nintendo console.
  • Devon Pritchard, president of Nintendo of America, addressed the topic in an interview with Variety.
  • Nintendo neither confirms nor denies any deal and points to Take-Two and Rockstar as the ones responsible for any announcement.
  • Switch 2 has already received major multiplatform releases, which is fuelling the speculation.
  • Neither Rockstar nor Nintendo has confirmed that a version of the game is in development for the console.

Reading between the lines: what Nintendo is (and isn't) saying

Pritchard's statement is straight out of the corporate playbook. When a platform holder doesn't own a game, it can't announce it on its own, even if a port is in the works. That's why the answer isn't a hint either way: it's simply the only possible answer. The interesting part is what she didn't do: she didn't mention technical limitations, didn't say the game would be unworkable on their hardware, and didn't firmly shut the door. Nintendo would rather let the rumour breathe.

On the other side is the big technical unknown. GTA 6 promises an ambitious, dense open world built for current home console hardware. Switch 2 has surprised people by running demanding games with the right settings, but a Rockstar game is in another league in terms of scale and simulation. Any version for the hybrid would almost certainly involve visual cutbacks and would probably arrive later than on other platforms, something Rockstar has done before with its staggered releases across consoles and PC.

Who this affects

Players who only own a Switch 2, obviously, who are left out for now. But also content creators and roleplay and multiplayer communities: arriving on a new platform expands the player base, but it also raises questions about crossplay, content parity and the online experience if the Nintendo version performed very differently.

Our take

Here at Underworld Lordz, we're clear on this: there's no news here, just a well-dressed no comment. And that's fine. Asking Nintendo to confirm someone else's game is like asking the stadium to announce the club's new signing. What it does show is that Nintendo wants to be part of the conversation around big third-party releases, something unthinkable not that many years ago, and that's good news for anyone who plays in its ecosystem.

Now, let's be critical. For competitive players and for anyone who makes a living creating GTA content, a Switch 2 version would make sense as a portable entry point, not as a main platform. GTA Online is an ecosystem where frame rate, latency and stability matter, and a cut-down port could end up stuck in no man's land: too demanding to enjoy in handheld mode and too limited to go head-to-head with players on home consoles. If it comes, it should come done right, even if it's late. A rushed port would do more damage to the brand than not having one at all.

And a word of warning for rumour hunters: with launch getting closer and closer, every silence is going to be read as a covert confirmation. Don't fall into that trap. Until Rockstar says something, GTA 6 on Switch 2 is a wish, not a plan.
