GTA 6 wants it all: Rockstar promises scale and detail without compromise

Rockstar has raised the bar on expectations once again, as if they weren't already high enough. As reported by GameSpot from an interview with Game Informer, Aaron Garbut, one of the studio's leads, said that with GTA 6 they haven't had to choose between size and level of detail. He explained that game development usually means sacrificing scale to gain detail, or detail to gain interaction, but that with this project they decided to go the other way and push all of those areas to the max at the same time.

Why does it matter? Because we're talking about the most anticipated release of the generation, from a studio that doesn't usually make promises lightly. Garbut went as far as saying that Rockstar had never made anything like it and admitted that the pressure is huge, something the team handled by trying to deliver more than what's expected. When a company publicly admits to that level of pressure, it's also setting the standard we'll judge it by.

What you need to know

  • Rockstar says GTA 6 pushes detail, reach, breadth, scale, interaction and density all at once.
  • The game is set in Leonida, the GTA universe's version of Florida, although it won't include Walt Disney World.
  • It launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • According to the reports cited, it has already reached around 6 million copies pre-ordered and more than $570 million in pre-sales.
  • Rockstar also confirmed more than 170 animal species, including cane toads and monkeys.

Total ambition, but with limits

Garbut's message is clear: no strategic cuts. Even so, Rockstar itself hints that no game can cover everything. The most striking example is the absence of Walt Disney World from Leonida, an understandable gap when you consider the rights to such a heavily protected brand. Still, the studio insists it will deliver the full Florida experience; in other words, the goal isn't to copy the real map but to capture its essence, its chaos and its personality.

The figure of more than 170 animal species fits that density-first philosophy: a world that isn't just big, but alive. And the reported pre-order numbers confirm that players have already given it a vote of confidence before seeing the final product. With Lucia and Jason as the faces of the project, Rockstar holds a commercial advantage that very few studios in the world can afford.

Our take

Here at Underworld Lordz, we're clear on this: it's easy to promise that everything is maxed out; the hard part is making it all run at its best. For anyone who plays competitively or spends hours in online modes, density and interaction are only worth it if they come with solid performance. A gorgeous world that suffers frame drops or has systems that get in each other's way isn't progress, it's dead weight. Rockstar hasn't said anything here about performance or the online side, and that's exactly the part we care about most.

For content creators, on the other hand, the outlook is very promising. A huge map packed with detail is an endless source of clips, secrets, challenges and theories. If there really are that many layers of interaction, we'll be seeing videos of unexpected discoveries for months. That said, the we've never made anything like it rhetoric rubs us the wrong way a bit. It's a line we've heard many times in this industry, and it's worth taking with a grain of salt until we have the controller in our hands.

The reported pre-orders show that the hype is already there. Now the ball is in Rockstar's court, and with so much self-imposed pressure, any stumble will be felt twice as hard.
