GTA 6 Wants to Break the Mold: More Open Missions in Leonida and Less Rigid Scripting

Rockstar Games keeps fueling the wait for GTA 6 with new details about Vice City and the state of Leonida. As reported by Vida Extra, IGN spoke in July with Rob Nelson, the studio's co-director, and has now expanded on that conversation in more depth than was previously known. The result is a roundup of 15 details, some already known and others brand new, that paint an open world with an almost overwhelming level of density.
Of everything revealed, one point stands out to us in particular: mission design. For years Rockstar has carried the reputation of a studio whose missions are too linear, almost corridor-like, and GTA 6 looks set to address that criticism. If it pulls it off, we're not talking about a simple tweak: we're talking about changing how the game is played, how it's explored and, above all, how content is created around it. And all of this with an eye on November 19, the date the source points to as the next milestone to keep the excitement building.
What you need to know
- IGN spoke with Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar Games, back in July, and has now published expanded information.
- The details include both previously known features and completely new ones; the roundup covers 15 in total.
- Linear missions are still part of the game, but it aims to break away from that structure more often.
- The transition from story to open world will be smoother, and activities like chases and heists will be built into the missions themselves.
- There will be missions with multiple ways to complete them.
Goodbye (partly) to corridor missions
Anyone who has played a recent GTA knows the feeling: you reach the marker, the sequence kicks off and, from that point on, the game holds your hand. Step off the script and it's mission failed. That model works for telling cinematic stories, but it clashes head-on with the promise of an open world where you can supposedly do whatever you want. According to Vida Extra's report, that is exactly the criticism Rockstar wants to tackle in GTA 6.
It comes down to three ideas. First, blurring the line between story and open world: fewer abrupt cuts between “mission mode” and “free roam.” Second, integrating the world's systemic activities, like chases or heists, directly into missions instead of treating them as separate content. And third, offering missions with several ways to complete them. Keep in mind: nobody is talking about eliminating linearity, just breaking it more often. It's an important distinction if we want to keep expectations in check.
Who it affects
Casual players will get more freedom, no doubt about it. But where this change really hits hard is with two groups close to our hearts: speedrunners and content creators. Missions with multiple approaches mean routes to optimize, decisions to compare and situations that don't play out the same way every run. That's gold for anyone whose job is showing something different in every stream or video.
Our take
Here at Underworld Lordz, we're convinced: this is what GTA needed. Rockstar builds the most detailed worlds in the industry and then, for years, has forced us to move through them on rails during the key moments. If GTA 6 delivers on what's been described, the world and the story will finally be playing on the same team. For the competitive and speedrunning scenes, missions with multiple solutions could open up categories and routing debates that don't exist today.
That said, it's time to be critical. What we have are statements and a roundup of details, not something we've been able to play. “More often” is a very flexible phrase: it could mean half a dozen open missions or half the campaign. And it's worth remembering that, of the 15 details, the one making the most noise is precisely the hardest to judge until we have a controller in our hands. Hype is free; so is disappointment.
For creators, the advice is simple: get ready for a game that will reward experimentation. If missions truly allow for different paths, “five ways to complete this heist” content will become an everyday staple. Whoever gets there first with original ideas, and not just the usual walkthrough, will win the audience.
What do you think?
Rockstar is promising more open missions, but without fully giving up on linearity. Is it enough for you if it breaks the formula every now and then, or are you hoping for a truly open campaign? Do you think GTA 6 could become the next big game for speedruns and creative content?
