GTA 6 on Switch 2? Nintendo passes the ball to Rockstar and Take-Two

The question that has been circulating on forums and in communities for months has come up again, and once again without a clear answer. As reported by GameSpot, Devon Pritchard, the new president of Nintendo of America, was asked in an interview with Variety whether Grand Theft Auto VI will come to Switch 2. Her answer was neither a yes nor a no: that conversation, she essentially said, belongs to Take-Two and Rockstar, and on Nintendo's side there is nothing to announce for now.

It may look like just another of the industry's usual non-answers, but it carries weight. We are talking about the most anticipated release of 2026, possibly of the decade, and about the Nintendo console that many hope to see as a platform capable of hosting major third-party productions. The fact that Nintendo isn't closing the door, and is explicitly leaving it in the publisher's hands, fuels a debate that affects both players and those who make a living creating content around GTA.

What you need to know

  • Devon Pritchard, president of Nintendo of America, avoided confirming or ruling out GTA 6 on Switch 2 and referred the question to Take-Two and Rockstar.
  • GTA 6 is confirmed only for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, launching on November 19.
  • No PC version has been announced, although Rockstar's track record suggests it could arrive later.
  • In May 2025, NateTheHate reported that Rockstar was running tests to evaluate the game on Switch 2, while clarifying that this does not mean there is a release plan.
  • Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, has said the company could bring more games to Switch 2, but not necessarily all of its titles.

Technical tests, rumors and what is actually known

Much of the noise traces back to that May 2025 report. NateTheHate, a source with a solid leak track record, claimed that Rockstar was testing the technical feasibility of GTA 6 on Switch 2. However, the leaker himself pointed out that this kind of testing is common: studios frequently assess whether their games can run on different platforms, without that meaning any commitment to a release. In other words, just because something is being tested doesn't mean it's going to ship.

On Take-Two's side, the message is also cautious. Zelnick has opened the door to more of the company's titles coming to Nintendo's console, while making it clear that not its entire catalog will necessarily make the jump. GTA 6 has not been placed either on or off that list, at least not officially.

The Rockstar pattern

If the series' recent history teaches anything, it's that Rockstar is in no hurry to launch on multiple platforms on day one. The usual practice has been to release on consoles first and leave other versions, such as PC, for later. Everything suggests GTA 6 will follow the same formula: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in November and, perhaps, the rest afterward. In that scenario, a hypothetical Switch 2 version would be even further down the priority list.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, our view is clear: Pritchard's answer is correct from a corporate standpoint, but it adds nothing. Referring the question to Take-Two is literally what any console maker would do with a game it doesn't own. Reading a secret signal in those words that GTA 6 is headed to Switch 2 is overly optimistic. What it does show is that Nintendo has no interest in dampening its community's hopes, and that is strategy too.

For competitive players and anyone who takes online play seriously, the focus should be elsewhere. For years, GTA Online has been a massive ecosystem of roleplay, races, events and community servers, and everything points to its successor following the same path. What matters there is where the strong community will be from day one, and today that answer is PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. For content creators, waiting for a Switch 2 or PC version with no release date would mean handing the competition a head start of several months.

That said, we think it's fair to ask for more transparency. The uncertainty around PC in particular weighs heavily on the streaming and modding scene, which has historically kept the series alive for years. Rockstar can keep up its calculated silence, but every month without information is another month in which much of the community has to decide blindly which hardware to invest in.

What do you think?

Do you think Switch 2 has what it takes to run a game of this caliber, or would Rockstar be better off focusing on PS5, Xbox and a future PC version? Are you going to play GTA 6 on November 19, or would you rather wait and see which platforms come later?
