LoL Classic Says Goodbye in January 2027: Riot Pulls the Plug on Nostalgia After Three Months

It was one of the most frequent requests from the League of Legends community, and when it finally arrived, it seemed like Riot Games had been listening. But the honeymoon was short-lived: according to Vida Extra, the company has announced that LoL Classic will no longer be available once the 2026 season ends, meaning it will be unplayable from January 2027 onward. All of this comes roughly three months after its debut as a standalone mode developed by the studio.
The official explanation is simple and a little uncomfortable: plenty of players enjoyed the trip down memory lane, but most of them have already gone back to other parts of the game. In other words, nostalgia hooked people at first but didn't keep them around. For a studio that usually scrutinizes every experiment closely, the shutdown sends a clear message about what does and doesn't work in a MOBA with this many years behind it, and it's also a warning for those who ask for alternative modes without considering how long they'd actually play them.
What You Need to Know
- LoL Classic is shutting down at the end of the 2026 season; it will be unavailable from January 2027.
- The mode is being retired roughly three months after its official launch.
- Riot acknowledges that, although people liked it, most players went back to other League of Legends modes.
- It will remain active for the rest of Season 3.
- The stated intention is for this to be a break: Riot wants to bring it back, likely as an event mode with tweaks and new features.
What Changes and Who It Affects
In the short term, nothing: if you feel like continuing to play the classic version, you have until the end of the season. The real change comes with the new year, when the mode disappears from the queue. Those hit hardest are the players who had turned Classic into their safe haven, that group of veterans who preferred the pace and feel of another era over the current version of the game, along with the creators who had found a well-received niche of nostalgic content there.
That said, Riot is leaving the door open. As reported by Vida Extra, the studio describes this as a temporary farewell and talks about bringing the mode back later, most likely as an event and with changes. It also promises to share what it has learned during this period and encourages the community to keep sending feedback on the mode. Riot also released a dev update video dedicated to LoL Classic, which shows the project wasn't a minor experiment within the company.
A Pattern That's Starting to Weigh
The outlet breaking the news frames it as another defeat for Riot, and that reading isn't unfounded: this isn't the first time one of the studio's projects has generated hype only to run out of steam. There's no need to be alarmist, but it's worth noting that the community is starting to greet every new release with some caution, wondering how long it will last before investing hours in it.
Our Take
Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, our view is clear: nostalgia sells, but it doesn't sustain. LoL Classic was a great idea for a week of laughs with friends and a terrible candidate for a permanent mode unless it came with something more. When the main appeal is remembering what the game was like years ago, the second and third matches no longer surprise you. For competitive players, Classic never had a real incentive either: without clear progression or any impact on ranked, it's hard to justify the time compared to the queue that actually measures your skill.
That said, the shutdown also says something unflattering about the way Riot operates. Launching a highly requested mode, giving it barely a quarter to mature and then announcing its removal shows little patience and an excessive reliance on short-term metrics. Some experiences need time to find their community, especially niche ones. For content creators, this volatility is a serious problem: building series, guides or formats around a mode that could vanish within months is a risky bet.
Even so, the event format seems like the right way forward to us. A Classic that returns periodically, with tweaks and some kind of incentive, could become an anticipated occasion instead of an empty queue. The key will be whether Riot follows through on its promises and genuinely shares what it has learned, rather than shelving the idea.
What Do You Think?
Maybe you were one of those eagerly waiting for Classic, or one of those who tried it for a couple of evenings and went back to the usual Rift. Either way, we want to hear your take: do you think Riot jumped the gun by shutting down LoL Classic, or will it work better as an occasional event?
