Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still alive and kicking. Nintendo has released version 4.0.1 of the game, which is available to download now. It doesn't bring new tracks, characters or modes, but it does tackle several issues that had been bugging the community for weeks: multiplayer bugs, graphical glitches when playing on Nintendo Switch 2 and unexpected crashes. As reported by Vandal, the official patch notes list four fixes in total.
Why does a simple maintenance patch matter? Because Switch 2 already has its own Mario Kart, Mario Kart World, which is doing very well, and yet Nintendo hasn't let go of one of the biggest hits from its previous console. If you compete, run tournaments or simply live in online lobbies, the message is clear: MK8DX is not an abandoned game, and its technical issues are still a priority.

What you need to know
- Version 4.0.1 is out now and adds no content or gameplay changes: it's a bug-fix patch.
- The official notes include four fixes, focused on multiplayer, graphics on Switch 2 and unexpected crashes.
- It fixes a bug that caused more obstacles and item boxes to appear than intended when playing online.
- It arrives just over a month after version 4.0.0, released on September 1, which adapted the game to the Switch 2 hardware.
A patch to polish the jump to Switch 2
The key to understanding 4.0.1 lies in its predecessor. Version 4.0.0 introduced major improvements to take advantage of the new console, and as with any technical overhaul of that scale, the launch left some loose ends. The following weeks were spent spotting bugs, and this patch is Nintendo's response to what turned up.
| Version | Date | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 4.0.0 | September 1 | Improvements to take advantage of the Switch 2 hardware |
| 4.0.1 | Just over a month later | Four bug fixes, no new content |
The most relevant fix for the competitive scene is the multiplayer one. Having more obstacles and item boxes than there should be isn't a cosmetic detail: in Mario Kart, the number of boxes determines how many chances you get to pick up items, and obstacles change racing lines. In other words, the bug could change how an online race played out compared to what we all have memorized.
The remaining fixes target stability: graphical issues specific to Switch 2 and game crashes. The source doesn't go into the technical details of each one, so we won't speculate about which tracks or modes were affected, but it's clear who it hits closest to home: players who have already made the jump to the new console and are still playing MK8DX on it.
Who does it affect?
- Switch 2 players who keep MK8DX as their go-to Mario Kart, whether for competing or everyday play.
- Online communities and leagues that need every race to be played on a level playing field.
- Content creators, for whom a crash in the middle of a live stream is, at the very least, a bad time.
Our take
At Underworld Lordz we welcome patches like this, even if they never show up in a trailer. A competitive game lives on consistency, and a bug that changes the number of item boxes online is exactly the kind of issue that shouldn't last a day longer than necessary. Credit to Nintendo for fixing it; less credit for letting it reach release and leaving the community to put up with it for weeks.
There's also a bigger picture here. With Mario Kart World leading the charge on Switch 2, it was easy to assume MK8DX would be put out to pasture. This support proves otherwise, and that's good news for the scene: many players have years of hours, technique and rivalries built up in this game, and not everyone wants to, or can, start from scratch. As long as both games coexist, Nintendo has a duty to look after both.
For creators, the message is simple: update before your next stream or recording. A crash in the middle of a decisive race or a graphical glitch on screen is no fun for anyone. And if you run tournaments, it's worth requiring every participant to have 4.0.1 installed to avoid surprises and disputes.
What do you think?
Now it's your turn. Had you noticed more boxes or obstacles than usual in your online races, or did an unexpected crash on Switch 2 leave you stranded? And the big question: with Mario Kart World already on the console, are you still sticking with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for competitive play, or have you already made the switch?
