Metro 2033 and Last Light return with a free next-gen patch: is it enough to revive the series?

The Moscow tunnels are switching their flashlights back on. As reported by Vida Extra, 4A Games has announced a free next-gen update for Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, the two titles usually sold together in the Metro Redux bundle. The update arrives on October 22 on all platforms and, according to the studio, brings a healthy number of technical improvements to two games that are already showing their age.
The reason for the celebration is no small thing: the series has officially passed 50 million games sold worldwide. And the timing is no accident either. The last major Metro release came out in 2019, and since then the only new addition to the franchise has been the virtual reality experience Awakening. The announcement is being read as a clear sign that 4A Games wants to bring Metro out of the shadows and back into the conversation. That said, the outlet itself points out in its headline that, among so many new features, the most important improvement seems to be missing.

What you need to know

- It will be available on October 22 on all platforms.
- The update celebrates the series passing 50 million games sold worldwide.
- The latest entry in the series launched in 2019; since then, only the VR experience Awakening has been released.
- Vida Extra notes that, despite the long list of improvements, the one that might matter most is missing.
Context: a series that had been silent for far too long
Metro has always been an oddity in the shooter landscape. While the genre filled up with quick matches, battle passes and multiplayer modes, 4A Games' series bet on tension, scarce resources and an oppressive atmosphere that turned every bullet into a decision. That identity earned it a very loyal community, but it also pushed the series out of the spotlight once the studio stopped releasing mainline entries.
The Redux bundle was already a revamp of the first two games back in the day, so this update is, in practice, a second coat of paint for titles many players have had in their libraries for years. The studio has detailed the full list of changes on its official blog; what matters for players is that they won't have to pay again to get them. In an industry where full-price remasters are almost the norm, a free upgrade is a welcome gesture.
Who does it affect?
Mainly those who already own the games and want an excuse to go back, and those who never got into the series and are looking for the perfect moment to jump in. Content creators too: an update with a set release date and a nostalgic community is perfect material for streams, comparisons and guides.
Our take
At the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we see it clearly: it's good news, but only half good news. 4A Games rewarding its community with a free update is exactly the kind of decision we'd like to see more often. However, celebrating 50 million copies with a facelift for old games also highlights what players really want: a new entry. Seven years after the last mainline release, the patch feels more like a reminder that the series exists than a plan for the future.
For competitive players, Metro has never been natural territory: there's no scene, no ranked play, and the design is purely single-player. But that doesn't mean it has nothing to offer. Metro speedruns have their own community, and any technical change can shake up routes, times and strategies. If you're the type who squeezes every last second out of a run, keep an eye on October 22, because an update like this could rewrite more than one record.
For creators, the opportunity is obvious, though with a caveat: if, as Vida Extra suggests, the improvement the community wanted most is missing, expect a good part of the conversation to revolve around that absence. And that, told well, is content too. Our final verdict is cautiously optimistic: if this is the first step toward something bigger, all the better; if this is all there is, it will fall short for a series with this much potential.
