Minecraft is shaking things up again. During this year's Minecraft Live, Mojang announced The Sift, the game's first new dimension in almost 15 years. It came with a huge number attached: more than 425 million copies sold worldwide. Our core information comes from Gamereactor Spain, and here we break down what it means for anyone who experiences the game through competition and content creation.

This matters because dimensions are no ordinary addition in Minecraft. The Overworld, the Nether and the End define the structure of everything that gets played, speedrun or streamed. Adding a fourth piece to that framework changes routes, objectives and the way a run is told. On top of that, The Sift won't arrive in the base game first. It will debut in Minecraft Dungeons 2, which says a lot about how Mojang wants to connect its ecosystem.

What you need to know

  • Minecraft has passed 425 million copies sold worldwide.
  • The Sift is the first new dimension in almost 15 years and the game's fourth, alongside the Overworld, the Nether and the End.
  • It debuts next week in the interconnected world of Minecraft Dungeons 2. It is expected to reach Bedrock and Java next year.
  • You get in through rifts: you can jump in on purpose or fall into one by accident.
  • The base game is also getting an ice-themed update, with frozen caves, a new biome, calcite, ice crystals and stalactites.

What The Sift is and how it fits into Minecraft

According to the official blog post cited by the source, The Sift is described as a beautiful, vibrant place full of souls. So far we know the names of some of its first areas: The Meadow and The Carapace. It isn't much to go on, but it points to a different tone from the hellish Nether or the emptiness of the End. This dimension seems designed to be explored at a relaxed pace, not just survived.

Access through rifts is the detail with the most potential. The fact that you can fall in by accident opens the door to unexpected situations, and if it's well designed, that's gold for any stream. The release order is also striking. First Minecraft Dungeons 2, then classic Minecraft in its Bedrock and Java editions. Anyone who wants to see The Sift as soon as possible will have to go through the spin-off.

Ice is coming to the base game too

Minecraft Live also revealed an update for the main game with the cold front and center: frozen caves, a new ice biome, calcite blocks, ice crystals and stalactites. Mojang said something about how those stalactites grow, but the source text cuts off at that point, so we'd rather not fill in the gaps. The source also mentions the game coming to Nintendo Switch 2, though without further details in the available excerpt.

Our take

Here at the Underworld Lordz newsroom, we're clear on this: a fourth dimension is the most ambitious announcement Minecraft has made in years. Almost 15 years without touching that structure is a long time, and the competitive community, especially speedrunners, has squeezed everything possible out of the Overworld, Nether, End route. If The Sift ends up integrated into the main progression, it could change entire categories. If it stays an optional extra, it'll be a paradise for exploration but won't shake up competition. We don't know yet which it will be, and that's exactly the question we're most interested in.

What gives us pause is the release strategy. Launching the dimension in Minecraft Dungeons 2 and leaving Bedrock and Java for next year makes commercial sense, because it drives the new game with the most exciting new feature. Even so, the original Minecraft player base, the one that took the game to those 425 million copies, will have to wait. For content creators, that means making a choice: jump on the spin-off now to capture early interest, or wait for the definitive version in the base game. Our advice is to cover both, but without burning out the format too early.

The ice update strikes us as more conservative, though still useful. The new blocks and frozen caves are fertile ground for builders and custom maps, and that kind of content still drives a good share of the game's views. It isn't revolutionary, but it keeps the momentum going while the big stuff arrives.

What do you think?

The Sift promises to change how we picture Minecraft, but it will land in another game first. Do you think that's the right call, or a way of making the long-time community wait? Drop by the team chat or our Discord and let us know: will you play The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons 2 next week, or would you rather wait to see it in Java and Bedrock?
