Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 reaches its official launch this October 23. According to information published by Vandal, Infinity Ward's new shooter will unlock at 0:00 local time in every country, on the night of the 22nd to the 23rd, with no staggered windows and no time zone conversions to work out. Those who pre-ordered the game have already had a week with the campaign in early access and, from midnight, will finally be able to jump into multiplayer.

It matters because multiplayer is the competitive heart of the series and, in practice, the mode that decides whether a Call of Duty settles into our Discord channels for months or gets forgotten in two weeks. The campaign has set the bar high: Vandal reports that a large part of the community ranks it among the best in the franchise. Now it's time to find out whether the part we really care about as a team lives up to that start.

What you need to know

  • Official date: October 23, unlocking at 0:00 local time in every country during the night of the 22nd to the 23rd.
  • Early access: those who pre-ordered have been playing the campaign for a week and will be the first into multiplayer.
  • No pre-order or physical copy: everyone else will have to wait until launch day to start playing.
  • The campaign delivers: memorable characters, varied and replayable missions and the series' usual spectacle, according to the impressions gathered by Vandal.
  • What remains to be seen: the real quality of the multiplayer, which is what will shape the game's competitive future.

Local time, no calculator needed

The decision to set the unlock at local midnight is probably the best news for a community spread across two continents like ours. There's no need to check the time in Los Angeles or subtract time zones: in Spain it will be at 0:00 on October 23, and in every Latin American country it will also be at 0:00 of their own midnight. The only thing that changes is who gets in first. By pure geography, the European side of the team will be in several hours before our teammates in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina or Chile.

That has a practical consequence worth accepting right now: by the time the Americas get going, the first impressions, the first memorized maps and the first videos will already be circulating. It isn't a real long-term competitive advantage, but it is one for anyone who makes a living from the first hours of content. Our advice is to have the game downloaded, your account linked and your sensitivity settings ready before the clock strikes twelve. The first nights of a Call of Duty are spent playing, not staring at loading screens.

A campaign that raises expectations

The context helps explain the anticipation. Infinity Ward is once again behind an entry in the Modern Warfare sub-series, historically the one with the most weight in the competitive scene and in the memory of veteran players. Vandal notes that its review in progress matches the community's enthusiasm: the campaign brings back the best of the classic formula and adds a few modern ideas, with missions that invite replaying and a cast that leaves a mark.

That said, let's be clear: a great campaign has never been a guarantee of a great multiplayer. They are different teams, different priorities and different problems. The story mode can be polished in a controlled environment; multiplayer has to survive millions of players logging in at once, a weapon balance that nobody has stress-tested yet and a competitive community that spots any flaw within hours.

Our take

At the Underworld Lordz editorial desk, we welcome the clear schedule and the good impression the campaign has left, but we aren't going to buy into the general hype until we've played the multiplayer seriously. As competitive players, what matters to us is server stability in the first few days, how the weapons perform and the response time in matches. If all of that works, Modern Warfare 4 could become the team's go-to title this season. If not, the campaign will be a nice memory and little more.

We're not thrilled about the early access model tied to pre-orders either. We understand the commercial logic, but it splits the community into two speeds and punishes those who prefer a physical copy or who simply want to read opinions before paying. For content creators it's an added problem: anyone who didn't pre-order arrives late to the conversation, and in a launch of this scale, arriving late costs views.

Our recommendation for the team's creators is simple: make the most of the night of the 22nd to the 23rd to stream live, but with realistic expectations. Past launches in the series have taught us that the first night is bug and queue territory, and that the content that really lasts is what you record once you actually understand the game. Reacting in the heat of the moment sells, but analyzing with judgment builds loyalty.
